Women's Hoops Drops Heartbreaker at Toledo

3/6/2021 4:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The team will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team, on the court for its final regular season game of the 2020-21 campaign, dropped a heartbreaker to its Mid-American Conference rival, the University of Toledo, 59-55, today, March 6, inside Savage Arena.

With the setback, Eastern (10-9, 7-7 MAC) officially locked up the No. 8 overall seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament. It will play the No. 1 overall seed, Bowling Green State University on Wednesday, March 10, inside Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. More information about the game will be published in the near future.

In today's game, Eastern was led by the post duo of redshirt sophomore Ce'Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Florida International)) and senior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union), who put up 17 and 11 points, respectively. The pair was joined by Hudson's fellow upperclassman Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)), who finished the game with 13 points to notch her 17th double-digit scoring performance of the season.

Although it may have been a surprise to see Hudson in the starting lineup for EMU, it was a move that worked brilliantly for the visiting squad as she quickly established herself as the most dominant player in the game's opening minutes. After securing the opening tip for her team, Hudson quickly corralled a pass and made a perfect post move, one which gave her the first score of the game an put Eastern ahead, 2-0. Hudson added another bucket just moments later to put the Eagles ahead by four, 4-0, just three minutes into the contest. The hot start eventually led to an 8-2 EMU advantage, however, Toledo fought back with a 10-6 run of its own to pull within two, 14-12, with just under two minutes remaining in the frame. The two teams traded buckets over the final 90 seconds, which brought the score to 17-15, in favor of the Eagles, at the end of the first.

The second quarter saw a significant change in the pace of scoring, as just 24 total points were exchanged. Unfortunately for Eastern, 15 of those were from Toledo. Hudson continued to assert herself in the paint as she added another bucket for EMU. She carried a team-best eight points into the halftime intermission. The Eagles as a team, however, shot just 3-of-12 in the quarter. Despite the shooting woes, EMU was able to maintain a 26-24 lead as the clock crept under 90 seconds. Toledo finished the frame on a 6-0 run, however, which pushed its lead to 30-26 at halftime.

Still riding its momentum from the first half, Toledo increased its advantage in the opening seconds of the third quarter as it notched the first seven points of the half and took an 11-point, 37-26 lead. From there, EMU's scoring picked up dramatically, as it went on to score 19 points in the final 8:30 of play in the frame. The best stretch came as the quarter closed. Using the MAC's best defense to its advantage, Eastern was able to hold Toledo scoreless for the final 2:11 of the quarter. With Toledo locked down on its own end of the floor, the Eagles also took advantage on offense, where it used a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead as the buzzer sounded, 45-44. It was Skanes that hit a 15-foot jumper as time expired to give Eastern its first lead of the half.

The fourth quarter featured a classic back-and-forth battle between two highly-energized teams. After an EMU and-one, courtesy of Combs, put the Green and White in front, 48-45, Toledo came right back down the court and drained a three-point attempt of its own. Back down two, 50-48, EMU went inside to Hudson, who was dominant all game long. The move paid off as Hudson again backed her defender down and scored with ease to tie the game at 50-apiece with 5:30 remaining. With the score even, it was the Rockets that went on the game's next run as it scored six of the eight points during the next three minutes, a stretch which helped Toledo take a 56-52 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Although Eastern made a push late, the Rocket advantage proved to be enough as they finished the game in victorious fashion, 59-55.

EMU will take the court next Wednesday, March 10, against BGSU in the quarterfinal round of the annual Mid-American Conference Tournament. Game time is yet to be announced.
