ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team returns to the tee box Monday-Tuesday, March 8-9, at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island hosted by Michigan State University. The invitational will be held on the Sea Island Resort's Plantation Course with the Eagles playing 36 holes of continuous play Monday beginning at 8 a.m.
There will be 16 teams competing in the tournament, including: Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan, Georgia Southern, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Memphis, Miami, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Rutgers.
Playing for EMU will be senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic), senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary), redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park), senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego), and freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago).
Originally the tournament was to be played at the par-72, 7,180-yard Colleton River Club in Bluffton, S.C., however, the tournament was moved 118 miles south.
Last year, Eastern Michigan finished the event with a 887 (297-299-291), in eighth-place. Collins led the Eagles, shooting a 214 (68-76-70) to finish the tournament two-under and place ninth. Georgia Southern (-15) won the tournament by seven strokes over Iowa State (-8).
With Rees Jones's masterful renovation in 1998 of this Walter Travis original, the Plantation Course unfolds among a forest of ancient live oak and cedar, with a hint of danger lurking in its tidal creeks and lakes. Players appreciate the expansive fairways and stunning Atlantic Ocean views that make Plantation one of the best South golf courses. The course has been named as one of America's Best Resort Courses and America's Best State-By-State Courses You Can Play by Golfweek.
