Miranda Cadwell sets school record in discus with 44.14m throw
AUSTIN/SAN MARCOS, Texas & RALEIGH, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program finished day two of a three-meet week, Friday, March 26, in Austin/San Marcos, Texas, and Raleigh, N.C.
The most spectacular performance of the day came from sophomore Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) at the Raleigh Relays. The Illinois native put on a show in the discus, hurling a throw of 44.14m to set a new school record. The previous record at EMU of 43.96m was set by former Eagle Jada Taylor in 2016.
On the men's side, graduate students Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) and Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) produced personal-bests in the discus with throws of 53.01m and 52.84m, respectively. Graduate student Karlie Swanson (Coffs Harbour, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) also registered a career-best with a 5000m run time of 17:20.15.
In the Lone Star State, senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) registered a high jump of 1.76m for second place in the B division at the Texas Relays. Johnson's height is a season-high and marks her best performance while donning the Green and White. Elsewhere in the field, redshirt senior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va.-Fishburne Military) finished sixth in the long jump B division, reaching a leap of 7.28m.
On the track, junior hurdlers Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) and Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton (Central Michigan)) achieved personal-best times of 14.31 and 14.59, respectively, in the 100m hurdles.
The quartet of sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts), Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) grabbed the 12th-best time in the 4x100 relay, crossing the finish line in 46.41. Despite the strong performance, the group did not make the top-9 in their event thus they did not make the finals.
A pair of Eagles produced career-highs at the Bobcat Invitational. In the decathlon, senior Skyler Lester (Marietta, Ga.-Marietta) ran an 11.26 in the 100m and 52.38 in the 400m dash, respectively, for new bests. Second-year student-athlete Maura Lane (Cary, N.C.-Panther Creek (Campbell College)) set a career-high in the pole vault, soaring to a 3.80m height. Meanwhile, junior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) registered a 5.82m bound for third overall in the long jump.
Saturday, March 27, the Green and White will wrap up all three meets across the two states. Stay tuned tomorrow as graduate student Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.-Blanche Ely) returns to the track to run the 800m at the Texas Relays. Meanwhile, the women's 4x100 relay team will look to bounce back at the Bobcat Invitational. Lastly, the strong EMU throwers take on the rest of the field in the hammer throw.
