Taige Bryant sets school record in the hammer throw with 66.01m toss
AUSTIN/SAN MARCOS, Texas & RALEIGH, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program wrapped up its busy week, Saturday, March 27, in Austin/San Marcos, Texas, and Raleigh, N.C. At the meets, several Eagles saw their names written into the all-time record book while one member set a new record entirely.
"It was an exciting weekend for our team and I feel that we had strong performances in all event areas," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "Like most early season meets, we came away with a number of great marks and some that weren't quite what we hoped for. In both cases, it's great to have a starting point and something to build on.
"Vinny Magnusson had a spectacular 5000 meter race," added Parks. "He ran fearlessly, taking the lead against a national level field including an NCAA champion and holding it until the last 150 meters of the race. It was great to see him set another national record. We will have next weekend off to get some good training and recovery/rehab in and then use the experiences of this weekend to prepare for our meets in two weeks."
The weight throwers put on a clinic at the Raleigh Relays, with all five men's participants achieving career highs and placing in the top-10 all-time at Eastern Michigan. The top performance of the day came from graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial), who produced a 66.01m throw, surpassing former Eagle Keith Williams' 64.28. Additionally, Bryant's discus throw of 53.01m puts him second in the EMU record book.
Sophomore Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qatar-Aspire Academy) registered a toss of 63.33m, which now puts him No. 2 all-time. Meanwhile, seniors Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Leadership Bowman Academy) and Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway Sciences (Monroe College)), and graduate student Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) recorded throws of 63.03m, 55.45m, and 59.12, respectively.
On the women's side, senior Ariel Floyd (Mount Clemens, Mich.-Chippewa Valley) recorded a personal-best hammer throw of 56.79m for first place, putting her fourth in the EMU record book. Additionally, classmate Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) reached a career-high distance of 55.47m in the event for ninth place at the meet. Coming off a record-setting performance in the discus, sophomore Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) made a 48.40m toss, placing her eighth on the all-time list.
"Our throwers picked up right where they left off during the indoor season with two new school records and some strong marks across the board," added Parks. "It will be fun to see how they progress throughout the season."
At the Bobcat Invitational, the Eagles earned a trio of event titles across the two teams. Freshman Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) ran a red-hot 20.90-second 200m dash for the victory, winning by a margin of .22 seconds. Meanwhile, junior Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) completed the 110m hurdles in a blistering 14.28 (+0.5 m/s) time.
The women's 4x100 relay crew of sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts), Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) earned gold as they recorded a 45.42 mark. That time ranks eighth all-time in EMU history and is .77 off from tying the school record.
Lastly, the triple jumpers had a solid showing at the Texas Relays. Redshirt senior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va.-Fishburne Military) took eighth in the triple jump "A" division with a season-high bound of 15.57m. Sophomore teammate Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer (Coastal Carolina)) competed in the "B" division where he registered a leap of 14.81m.
Up next for the Eagles, some will return south for the Spec Towns Invitational, Friday-Saturday, April 9-10. The two-day meet is hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Meanwhile, others will stay in the mitten for Oakland University's Golden Grizzlies Invite. The OU meet takes place April 9 in Rochester, Mich.
