AUSTIN/SAN MARCOS, Texas & Raleigh, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program wrapped up day one of a three-day tri-meet, Thursday, March 25, in Austin/San Marcos, Texas, and Raleigh, N.C.
At the Texas Relays, EMU sprinters and hurdles gained experience against stiff competition. On the men's side, sophomore Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer (Coastal Carolina)) clocked in at 48.08 in the 400m dash, a career-high. Meanwhile, junior Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton (Central Michigan)) paced the Eagles in the 400m hurdles with a 54.67 time.
For the women, redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) produced a 200m dash time of 24.37. In the 400m, it was junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) who earned the top time for the Green and White, crossing the finish line in 56.88. Junior Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) recorded a 1:00.32 in the 400m hurdles, just .32 from tying her personal-best. Despite the strong performances, no Eagle finished in the top-9 of their events thus no tracksters advanced to the finals.
Just 30 minutes south, Eastern saw the return of graduate student Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West). The Illinois product competed in the javelin, registering a throw of 41.70m for EMU's sole event win of the day.
The men's distance runners exhibited their skills at the Raleigh Relays with multiple notable finishes. However, the most impressive performance came fom junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) in the 5000m run. The harrier shattered his previous best time of 14:14.14, ultimately recording an electric 13:45.66 for fourth place. Magnusson's time puts him fourth all-time at EMU, passing former national champion Jordan Desilets' 13:52.71 and places him behind former Eagle Willy Fink's 13:43.06. The Iceland native's mark also earns him Iceland's record time in the event.
In the field, senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) notched a second-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 17.99m. The New York native defeated all collegiate competition, falling only to an unattached opponent. Sophomore Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) registered a 13.07m throw to place 14th in the same event.
The Eagles will move on to day two of competition in all three meets. Stay tuned for results tomorrow as the women's 4x100 team face-off against power 5 teams at the Texas Relays. Meanwhile, at the Bobcat Invitational, graduate student Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) will make her season debut in the heptathlon. Lastly, redshirt sophomore Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) will look to show his best in the 10,000m run at the Raleigh Relays.
