Ganther records career-high in 100m dash

TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The sprinters of the Eastern Michigan University track & field team had a solid showing, Saturday, March 20, on the final day of the USF Bulls Invitational. The meet saw the return of seasoned veterans in graduate students Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geagua) and Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)).

"This weekend was about getting the 4x100m relay team a chance to run an event that is hard to simulate in practice," said Associate Head Coach Chris Best. "I thought they did a good job today and now we know what we need to work on moving forward."

Mason and Ganther both competed in section one of the 100m dash, where they placed in the top three. Ganther notched the top spot with a personal-best time of 11.83 (+0.3 m/s), while Mason grabbed third in 12.01 (+0.3 m/s). Meanwhile, redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) captured silver in the first heat of the 400m dash as she produced a 56.04 time.

In the 4x100, the experienced crew picked up where they left off nearly two years ago. The quartet of sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts), Johnston, Mason, and Ganther earned a second-place finish, crossing the finish line in 45.67. The Eagles were runner-up to USF's B group who recorded a 45.12 time. Additionally, the Green and White's 45.67 clip almost cracked the top-10 in EMU's record book, with the No. 10 spot registering a 45.53. That time is owned by the 2004 squad of Lela V. Nelson, Eboni Jenkins, Shakera Pinto, and Patrice Beasley.

"For Kolby and Brittni this was a great opportunity for them to finally be able to race after over a year off," said Best. "They've worked hard all fall and indoor season which resulted in a solid opener for both and a lifetime best for Kolby. Micah Johnston had a solid 400m after not racing the previous year indoors and outdoors. She's still learning and getting better everyday."

Up next for the Eagles is a trio meets going on simultaneously, Thursday-Saturday, March 25-27. Members of the EMU track & field program will be spread across the country, competing in the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational, and Raleigh Relays. The three meets are all three days apiece.
