YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team were unable to take down Northern Illinois University Sunday, March 14, at the Chippewa Club, ultimately falling, 6-1. The Eagles move to 6-6 this season, and start Mid-American Conference play 0-2, after losing to Ball State, March 12.
"This was a very tough loss because I feel we match up very well with them," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "Today we just didn't do the little things necessary to get the win."
The redshirt junior pairing of Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich-Imlay City (Wright State)) earned their second win of the weekend in doubles, 6-3, and move to 7-1 at the No. 2 spot. Redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem)) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) fought hard at the No. 1 double flight, but could not pull off the win and fell 4-6. The Eagles were unable to secure the doubles point against the Huskies going into singles play.
It was redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) who earned the solo point for the Green and White, downing her competition in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. The France native is now 5-0 at the No. 4 singles spot, 9-3 overall. Pelayo battled at the No. 2 single flight, but was bested by her opponent from NIU, losing 3-6, 6-3, 0-1.
The Eagles now turn their attention to Western Michigan University Friday, March 19, as they complete their three-game homestand to begin MAC play. The action at the Chippewa Club will begin at 1 p.m.
