Eagles in Search of First Conference Win

The Green and White play at home against Western Michigan and on the road at Miami
YPSILANTI, Mich./ OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team will take on a pair of Mid-American Conference foes this weekend in Western Michigan and Miami (OH) Friday, March 19 and Sunday, March 21, respectively. The matchup against Western Michigan will take place at the Chippewa Club at 1 p.m., while the competition against Miami will be in Oxford, Ohio at 1 p.m.
Eastern (6-6; 0-2 MAC) started conference play 0-2 after falling to Ball State, March 12, and Northern Illinois, March 14. Both matches ended with a 1-6 score. The Eagles saw singles wins from redshirt freshmen Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sport and Education) and Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau). Popma earned her first conference win against BSU at No. 1, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0, while Pommiers defeated her NIU opponent in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4. The No. 2 doubles pairing for EMU has been finding its stride, as redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) claimed back-to-back victories over the Cardinals (6-2) and Huskies (6-3). The duo is now 7-1 in the No. 2 spot, and 8-4 overall.
Western Michigan (10-0; 2-0 MAC) opened its MAC schedule by defeating Miami, March 12, and Bowling Green, March 14. Both matches were close and ended in 4-3 scores. The RedHawks (6-5; 0-2 MAC) lost to Toledo, 2-5, after their loss to the Broncos.
Next week, the Green and White will focus on Toledo Friday, March 26, and then travel to Buffalo Sunday, March 28. The contest between the Eagles and Rockets will begin at 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Club, while the match with the Bulls will begin at 11 a.m. at the UB Tennis Center/Miller Tennis Center.
