FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University track & field program capped off its indoor season with an incredible display of athleticism at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Saturday, March 13, inside the Randal Tyson Center.

In the national indoor 3000m run, junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) made his presence known. The harrier got off to a great start, making a move from the middle of the pack all the way to third in the first three laps. The Iceland native jockeyed for position alongside other competitors, ultimately finishing in seventh with a career-high time of 7:53.72. University of Oregon's Cole Hocker took home the individual title, finishing in a personal-record 7:46.15.

"Vinny ran great, he showed a lot of maturity and poise to put himself in position to finish as a First Team All-American," said Assistant Track Coach Mark Rinker. "I'm really proud of how he represented the entire program and our alumni."

His electric clip beats out his previous best of 7:53.92 that he set earlier this year at the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, Feb. 5-6. That mark ranked 13th in Division I coming into the championships. Magnusson's new personal-best puts him second in the EMU record book, just behind former NCAA national champion and EMU legend Boaz Cheboiywo (7:52.40). Furthermore, the junior's time sets a new national Icelandic record.

Cheboiywo was the last Eagle to register a top-5 finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, doing so inside the Randal Tyson Center back in 2003. At the title race, the Kenya product crossed the finish line in a strong 7:58.76 time. After his college days in Ypsilanti, Cheboiywo returned to Arkansas' Randal Tyson Center, setting a facility record in the 3000m run with a time of 7:35.65 in 2006.

With the indoor slate coming to a close, the Eagles now turn their attention to the outdoor season. The outdoor meet schedule will be made available in the coming days.

Wrapping up on Monday, March 15, will be the NCAA Cross Country Championships featuring EMU junior Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington). The men's 10K race begins at 1:40 p.m. ET in Stillwater, Okla., hosted by Oklahoma State University.

While typically held late in the year, COVID-19 pushed the title race to mid-March to ensure teams had proper time for conference meets. Originally, the Mid-American Conference was not going to have a cross country season, however, the league decided to go forth with an abbreviated season. Eastern Michigan ran away with the men's title to hoist the team's 24th conference title with Payne finishing runner-up in 24:00.3.
