Day two begins Saturday, March 20, at 10:00 A.M.

TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — A trio of Eastern Michigan University track & field members showcased their talents, Friday, March 19, on day one of the USF Bulls Invitational. The season-opener for outdoor track and field, the Eagles faced off against Division I institutions such as Albany, Florida A&M, Northern Colorado, and Virginia Commonwealth.

Grand Valley State made the long trek while Tampa drove 10 minutes south to represent the Division II ranks. Additionally, local NAIA schools Keiser University and Southeastern University made appearances.

"Tiffany, Morgan, and Payne haven't raced a 400-hurdle race in nearly two years, and we are very happy with their "tune-up" race," said Associate Head Coach Sterling Roberts. "We're looking forward to seeing their progress as they get more races under their belts!"

On the men's side, the Eagles were represented by junior co-captain Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School). Most recently, the Saskatchewan native notched a third-place finish in the 60m hurdles at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 27. While at the conference meet, the junior tied his career-high time of 8.11 to earn bronze.

Today, Wylie placed second in the second heat as he produced a 56.69 time in the 400m hurdles. For the junior, this was his first time competing in the event since the MAC Outdoor Championships, May 9-11, 2019.

For the women, juniors Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) and Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-MillCreek) also took on the competition in the 400m hurdles. Cernej-Garcia took fifth place in the hurdles, crossing the finish line in 1:03.52 in the first heat. For both Eagles, they too have not ran the 400m hurdles for the first time in nearly two years.

Meanwhile, Iverson achieved bronze in the second heat with a 1:04.98. The Georgia native participated in the 60m hurdles at the conference indoor championships for the pentathlon where she registered a 9.08-second time, Feb. 26-27.
