Eagles Fall to Bulldogs in Game One

Reinkall has another stellar outing for the Eagles
Junior Will Oberg (Wayzata, Minn-Wayzata (Heartland)) extended his hitting streak to five games, recording the first hit of the night for Eastern. Senior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and fellow upperclassman Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller (Lincoln Trail)) each added a hit round to out the Green and White's offensive efforts on the night.
On the mound, senior Justin Reinkall (Superior, Wis.-Superior (Southeast)) shined once again for EMU, pitching 2.0 innings, striking out a season-high four batters, and allowing just one hit and one walk during his frames. Classmate Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) made his third start of the season, throwing 4.2 innings, striking out two, and only walking one.
A quiet start to the game, both EMU (4-3, 0-0 MAC) and Mississippi State (11-3, 0-0 SEC) went down in order in the first inning. However, it was the Bulldogs that were able to cross the plate first, taking a 1-0 lead after the second inning and adding three more runs in the third, extending its lead to 4-0.
After the first nine batters were put down in order, the Eagles started to find a bit of offense in the fourth. Leadoff man Oberg popped a single into right field to start things off, and advanced to second on a wild pitch to get a runner in scoring position for EMU for the first time. Two batters later, Jones walked to put runners on the corners with two outs, but Eastern could not get anyone across the plate.
MSU added three runs in the fifth to put the score at 7-0 in favor of the home team, a lead it would extend to 8-0 in the sixth. After the first three Bulldog batters loaded the bases to start the sixth, Reinkall entered the game and retired the next three batters via strikeout, flyout, and strikeout, respectively, to keep the inning from getting out of hand.
Adding a pair of hits in the top of seventh, Jones and Bault singled in back-to-back at-bats, with Jones finding the right field line, while Bault went through the left side. Despite having just one out, Eastern was unable to score anyone. Continuing his strong showing in the bottom of the frame, Reinkall kept Mississippi State off the board, striking out an additional two in the process.
The Bulldogs added six additional runs in the bottom of the eighth, and came away with the game one win, 14-0.
Eastern Michigan and Mississippi State will play game two of the three-game series tomorrow, March 13, at 2 p.m. CT from Dudy Noble Field.
