The junior held Mississippi State to its most consecutive scoreless innings this season
STARKVILLE, Miss. (EMUEagles.com) – Holding a 1-0 lead heading in to the bottom of the ninth, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team was walked off by No. 3 Mississippi State University, 4-1, at Dudy Noble Field, March 13.
For the Eagles, it was Justin Meis (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bethel Park) that shined the entire game. The junior threw eight innings of scoreless baseball, which marked the longest run Mississippi State (12-3, 0-0 SEC) has been held without scoring a run this season. Meis' 8.0 innings pitched marked a career-high, while also facing a career-high 32 batters and striking out four during his outing.
On offense, it was junior Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Moeller) making headlines for EMU, as he recorded his first home run of the season and fifth of his career to score the first run of the series for Eastern.
Coming out firing from the start, Meis sat Mississippi State down in order to end the first, a feat he would repeat in the third inning to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
Blasting a solo shot with one out in the top of the fourth, Hopkins gave Eastern Michigan its first lead of the series. With the score, the Green and White ended Mississippi State's streak of holding opponents scoreless, which was at a program-record 39 innings before the Eagles could snap it.
Meis returned to the mound in the bottom of the fourth, and proceeded to hold the Bulldogs hitless for another 1.2 innings, not allowing their first hit of the contest until there were two outs in the sixth. Continuing to roll through the lineup, the Pittsburgh, Pa. native would toss another 1-2-3 inning in the eighth before returning to the mound in the ninth.
Stringing together its biggest offensive effort of the contest, the Bulldogs notched three hits, including the game-winning home run, in the bottom of the ninth to seal their win, 4-1.
The Eagles and Bulldogs will finish out the series at Dudy Noble Field tomorrow, March 14, at 1 p.m. CT.
