Day One Results
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University track & field program put on a strong showing on day one of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 26, inside Central Michigan University's Indoor Athletic Complex. After the first day of competition, the men hold the first-place position with 58 points, while the women's team is currently in third with 25 points.
"Both the men and the women battled hard," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "On the men's side, our distance runners were spectacular and our throwers did what they've done all season long. A big highlight of the day was the 1-2-3 finish by our guys in the 5000 with Chris Devaney setting a new meeting record. On the women's side, we had some setbacks early in the competition but we kept fighting and finished the day strong. We feel like we've put ourselves in a good position on both sides and we're ready to bring our best to the final day."
The most thrilling moment of the day for EMU came during the men's 5000m run. Redshirt sophomores Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth), Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington), and sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) were dominant from the start, pacing the pack of harriers and not letting anyone pass. The trio swept the podium as Devaney earned the gold with a career-high 14:17.81, a meet record. Gualter came in second with 14:18.80 and Payne in third as he crossed the finish line in 14:19.71. As a result, their performances earned Eastern 24 points on the day. The Eagles have now won the 5000m at the indoor conference meet two years in a row.
Elsewhere on the track, the Eagles notched the 4000m distance medley relay title in 10:00.01 with their quartet of senior Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln), sophomore Trent Barron (Flint, Mich.-Carman-Ainsworth), senior Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf), and junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University). Eastern last won the DMR in 2020, also with Costa and Day on the crew.
In the field, the EMU weight throwers took spots No. 2-4 to earn quality points for the team. Senior Newlyn Stephenson ( Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) led the Eagles with a distance of 21.74m, while graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) produced a toss of 21.10m. Sophomore Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qatar-Aspire Academy) heaved a 20.91m throw for fourth.
Redshirt senior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va.-Fishburne Military) reached a distance of 7.16m to place fourth in the long jump while senior teammate Skyler Lester (Marietta, Ga.-Marietta) finished fifth with 6.80m. Lester also competed in the pentathlon where he is currently in first place with 3024 points.
On the women's side, they took third in the 4000m distance medley relay with a time of 11:39.15. Helping earn points for EMU was junior Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), senior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), junior Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child), and redshirt senior Karlie Swanson (Coffs Harbour, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)).
Junior Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) was an important performer for the Green and White, earning vital points as she finished third in the pentathlon with 3484 points.
Senior pole vaulter Graysen Simmons (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) placed fourth at a height of 3.81 while sophomore Nicole Bow (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) grabbed sixth at 3.66m.
In the weight throw, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) finished sixth with an 18.45m toss to earn three points for the Eagles.
Junior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) picked up two points for Eastern with a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.65m.
Elsewhere on the track, the Eagles fared well in their preliminaries as they registered a top-four mark in the 60m dash, 60m hurdles, 200m, and 400m. Reigning MAC champ sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) took the top spot in the 60m dash in a 7.53 clip. Junior Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) recorded an 8.81 time in the 60m hurdles for fourth. Classmate Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) was runner-up in the 200m with a 24.82. Lastly, redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) registered a 56.61 400m time for first.
The 2021 MAC Indoor Championships will pick back up Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. inside CMU's Indoor Athletic Complex.
