Track & Field gears up for the MAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-27

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field teams return to action this weekend for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The two-day meet is hosted by Central Michigan University and spans from Friday, Feb. 26 through Saturday, Feb. 27 inside  the Jack Skoog Indoor Track.

Last season, the women's squad took home the coveted MAC indoor title in dramatic fashion, Feb. 29, 2020, in Akron, Ohio. The Eagles found themselves in second place after the first day of competition with Northern Illinois holding the top spot. The two institutions were neck and neck late on the second day of competition, but the Green and White pulled away to defeat the Huskies, 104-102, for its fourth MAC indoor championship in six seasons.

Then-freshman Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) was named the MAC's Women's Freshman Track Performer of the Year after winning the 60m dash (7.50). Meanwhile, then-senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) leaped over the competition as she took home first prize in the high jump with a mark of 1.74m. Also earning First Team All-MAC honors was then-sophomore Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's), as she captured the 60m hurdles title with an 8.43 time.

This season, the women's team owns the top mark in the conference in four events. Davis, the reigning MAC champ in the 60m dash, has held on to her crown as she ranks first with a 7.53 clip. Wade also remains the best in the league in her event, as she recorded a season-best 8.59 in the 60m hurdles at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 12.

Meanwhile, the GVSU Big Meet also saw Eastern's 4x400 team achieve the fastest time in the MAC this season, 3:47.33,  with its crew consisting of junior Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer), graduate student Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), and juniors Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) and Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child)

In the field, senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) has not relinquished her high jump title, as she paces the league with a leap of 1.73m.

According to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the women's team is ranked in the top-25 in a pair of events. The USTFCCCA measures these rankings by totaling the top-four marks on the team to give an overall time/distance.

In the 400m, Eastern rounds out the top-25 with a total time of 3:48.10, equaling an average clip of 57.025 seconds among the best Eagles. Meanwhile, the weight throwers boast the No. 12 spot in Division I. EMU is led by senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception), the top four weight throwers combine for a distance of 72.98m, or an average of 18.25m per toss.

On an individual basis, there are two Eagles currently ranked in the top-50 nationally according to the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). Johnson's 1.73m high jump mark lands her tied for No. 46 in the nation with 10 other student-athletes. Clarke ranks 35th after producing a school-record weight throw of 19.82m.

On the men's side, four Eagles combined to earn six individual titles at the 2020 MAC Indoor Championships, as the team finished runner-up with 142 points at the conference meet. EMU fell short of Akron, who finished with 165.50 points.

Then-junior Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) captured first-place finishes in both the 800m (1:51.38) and the mile (4:06.86). Additionally, then-redshirt junior Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) placed first in the 60m hurdles with a blazing 7.89 clip. Then-sophomore Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) also earned a pair of titles, finishing first in the 3000m (8:18.44) and 5000m (14:25.25). Lastly, then-redshirt junior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va.-Fishburne Military) took home the gold in the long jump with a leap of 7.58 meters.

Currently, the men's team also tops the MAC in four events. Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) earned the fastest 3000m time in the conference after running a career-high 7:53.92 at the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, Feb. 5. The Iceland native's time is the best in the league by nearly 20 seconds, with runner-up Anthony Camerieri of Miami clocking in at 8:12.01.

Elsewhere on the track, redshirt sophomore harrier Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) holds the 5000m title after registering a personal-best time of 14:08.01 at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 12.

In the field, senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) owns the top spot in the shot put with a heave of 17.60m. Meanwhile, senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) sits atop the weight throw leaderboard in the MAC with a school-record 22.28m toss.

Seven Eagles are currently ranked in the top-50 nationally according to TFRRS. Magnusson's 7:53.92 3000m run is good for 12th in Division I, ahead of numerous Power 5 runners. Payne and sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) rank No. 46 (14:08.01) and No. 48 (14:08.65), respectively, in the 5000m after huge performances at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 12.

Additionally, three EMU weight throwers are among the best in the country: Stephenson (seventh - 22.28m), senior Taige Bryant (Edmond- Okla.-Edmond Memorial) (12th - 21.87m), and sophomore Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qatar-Aspire Academy) (14th - 21.51m). Senior Skyler Lester (Marietta, Ga.-Marietta) is No. 36 in the heptathlon after scoring 5167 points at the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, Feb. 5.

Moreover, the men's team owns four top-25 event squad rankings, three on the track and one in the field. The 60m dash crew rounds out the top-25 with a total time of 27.50, a 6.88-second average. EMU's highest ranking comes in the 3000m where the Eagles hold the No. 15 spot. The mean time for the squad is 8:01.00 for a total time of 32:40.02. Additionally, Eastern is 17th in the 5000m, clocking in at an average clip of 14:26.15 for a grand total time of 58:24.59.

Lastly, the weight throwers are No. 2 in the nation with an overall distance of 82.66m, 20.66m per thrower. The group is second behind North Dakota State University, edging the Eagles with an average heave of 20.72m for a grand total distance of 82.90m.
