Men's Golf Closes Strong at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished strong with a final round 303 at the 68th Annual Border Olympics, Feb. 23. In a field featuring four top-45 teams and four of the top-100 collegiate players, Eastern tied Lamar University for 15th-place with a two-day cumulative score of 925 (304-318-303).
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) led the way for the Eagles, finishing tied for 43rd with a 227 (73-77-77). The Long Sault, Ontario, Canada product has now posted 23 top-50 showings during his EMU career.
Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) tied for 63rd with a 231 (73-78-80), while redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) notched Eastern's best round of the tournament with a 72 to finish tied for 77th with a 234 (82-80-72).
Freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) rebounded with a 74 in the final round to notch a 240 (83-83-74) in his collegiate debut, while senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) added a 244 (76-88-80).
No. 26 Texas A&M captured the team title at 862, while No. 9 Texas finished at 870. Sam Houston State (885), ULM (887), UTSA (888), No. 13 Baylor (889), Illinois State (893), No. 43 Kent State (897), and New Mexico State (900) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Texas A&M's Dan Erickson and Texas' Hunter Ostrom tied after 54 holes at 4-under (212) with Erickson winning medalist honors on the second hole of a playoff.
Overall, it marked the team's first competition against other schools since Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew took part in the Colleton River Collegiate, March 2-3, 2020.
