LAREDO, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – After waiting 356 days since its last competitive round, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will have to wait one more day to wrap up second round action at the 68th Annual Border Olympics. Darkness suspended the tournament's opening day with most teams still needing a couple holes on the par 72, 7,375 yard Laredo Country Club layout.
The Eagles opened the tournament with a team score of 304 in the morning round and stood at +28 late in the second round.
Nothing like hitting the ground running for the Eagles, as the star-studded tournament field features four top-45 teams and four of the top-100 collegiate players. No. 26 Texas A&M holds the team lead at four-over to stand two strokes in front of No. 9 Texas and three shots ahead of Houston. Sam Houston (+8), Illinois State (+12), UTSA (+15), No. 43 Kent State (+18), No. 13 Baylor (+19), Louisiana (+19) and ULM (+20) rounded out the top-10.
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) is tied for 24th at five-over to lead the Eagles. The Ontario native opened the tournament with a 73 but was +4 through 17 holes in the afternoon session.
Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) is tied for 41st, while redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) is tied for 86th. Senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) notched an opening round 76, while freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) carded an 83 in his collegiate debut.
Texas A&M's Sam Bennett and Texas' Hunter Ostrom were tied atop the individual leaderboard, while Dan Erickson (Texas A&M) and Charlie Flynn (Louisiana) were tied for third at -2.
Overall, it marked the team's first competition against other schools since Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew took part in the Colleton River Collegiate, March 2-3, 2020.
Teams will wrap up their second rounds at 8 a.m. CT, Tuesday, before beginning final round play. Due to COVID-19 changes, the Eagles will compete as a team together off No. 13.
