The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team is set to open its 2021 spring slate this week, as the Eagles take part in the 68th Annual Border Olympics, Feb. 22-23. The two-day, 54-hole competition will be played at the Laredo Country Club. Scoring will be five players, counting the four lowest scores.

The course is scheduled to be set up as a par 72 at 7,375 yards.

There will be 19 teams competing at the Border Olympics, including: Abilene Christian, Arkansas Little Rock, Baylor, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Houston, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, Kent State, Lamar, Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe, Michigan, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston State, No. 9 Texas, Texas A&M and Texas-San Antonio.

Traveling to Laredo will include senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic), senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary), redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park), senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego), and freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago).

The very first Border Olympics College Golf tournament was held in 1952 with University of North Texas capturing the team title and their very own, Billy Maxwell, winning the individual title.

Throughout the ensuing years, many of the nation's top schools and golf programs visit Laredo to participate in the Border Olympics. Legendary golf coach Dave Williams and the Houston Cougars dominated the Border Olympics for many early years with teams consisting of Fred Couples, Keith Fergus, Bill Rogers, and Blaine McCallister. Current CBS Sports legend Jim Nantz played on the Houston Cougars golf team and was a part of the storied success of the Cougars at Border Olympics.

Golf legends Ben Crenshaw and teammate Tom Kite both were winners at the Border Olympics for the Texas Longhorns in the early 1970's. Other golf greats such as John Daly (University of Arkansas), Ben Curtis (Kent State), Shawn Stefani (Lamar University), Ryan Palmer (Texas A&M), as well as Phil Blackmar (University of Texas) and Don January (North Texas State) played in the Border Olympics.

Initially, the tournament was held at the Casa Blanca Golf course before transitioning to the Laredo Country Club in 1984.
