Parris scores career-high 9.850 on beam

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team defeated Northern Illinois University, 195.150-194.825, in comeback fashion Friday, Feb. 19. Eastern trailed after the third rotation, but was able to come from behind with a beam score of 48.925 to claim the Mid-American Conference victory at NIU's Convocation Center.
"We had some unexpected lineup changes tonight but I thought the team adapted well." said Head Coach Katie Minasola "They fought hard through the entire meet. We look forward to building off this performance on Sunday."
The Green and White started the night on bars and was led by senior bars anchor, Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick), who scored 9.825 to place fourth. Sophomore Hadyn Crossen (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) earned a career-high of 9.800 to finish fifth. Classmate Molly Parris (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson) and junior Kara Roberts (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) chipped in scores of 9.750 and 9.725, respectively, while senior Jada Rondeau (Savage, Minn.-Central) rounded out the scorers, earning 9.425. EMU trailed NIU after the first rotation, 48.525-48.800.
Moving to vault, the Eagles scored 48.750, with Crossen topping the lineup, scoring 9.800 to tie for second. Parris tied her career-high of 9.775 to finish fourth. Roberts and junior Carly Kosanovich (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) both scored 9.750, tying for fifth. Senior Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) added a score of 9.675 as Eastern remained behind Northern Illinois, 97.275-97.650, going into the third rotation.
Eastern Michigan totaled 48.925 on floor, looking to close the gap. Rondeau led the Eagles, scoring 9.850 and tying for second. Roberts earned fourth with a score of 9.800, while both Kosanovich and Boris received 9.775s for their performances and tied for fifth. Crossen rounded out the scorers with a 9.725. The Eagles made a dent in the Huskies lead but still trailed, 146.200-146.450.
Ending the meet on beam and hitting 48.925, the Green and White were led by Parris, earning a career-high 9.850 and tying for first place. Junior Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) scored 9.825, finishing third. Mickayla Stuckey (Union City, Ind.-Indiana Connections Academy) hit a season-high score of 9.800 and placed fourth. Tying her season-high of 9.775, senior Brianna Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) finished fifth, while Crossen added a score of 9.700. The Eagles were able to complete the comeback in the final rotation to win, 195.150-194.825.
For the first time in her career, Crossen competed all-around, totaling 39.025 and earning second place. Rondeau, for the first time this season, was also in the all-around competition and finished third with a score of 37.825.
The Eagles set their sights on Western Michigan Sunday, Feb. 21, with the action inside University Arena starting at 1 p.m.
