YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team defeated Kent State University, 195.825-195.650, Sunday, Feb. 14, inside the Convocation Center. The meet saw a season-high overall score for the Eagles, as the team secured a 2-1 record against the Golden Flashes during the 2021 season.
"We focused on capitalizing on each opportunity that is given to us today." said Head Coach Katie Minasola "I am so impressed with how the team took on that challenge, fighting hard through every event until the end of the meet. It was a fun Valentine's Day and I'm so proud."
The Valentine's Day action began on vault for EMU where the lineup scored 48.675, but trailed Kent State's 49.025 after the first event. Senior Kara Roberts (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) and junior Carly Kosanovich (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) led the team, scoring 9.775s, respectively, to tie for second overall. Sophomore Hadyn Crossen (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) earned a 9.750 on her vault, which tied for fifth, and sophomore Molly Parris (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson) chipped in a score of 9.700. Senior Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) rounded out the scoring five for the Eagles with a 9.675.
As Eastern moved to bars, it turned up the heat with senior Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) tying her career-high of 9.900 to earn first place. Rondeau earned a career-high 9.875 to claim second, and freshman Raisa Boris (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Park Center) hit a personal-best as well, tying for third overall with a 9.850. Crossen scored a 9.775, while both Roberts and Parris secured 9.725s. The squad score of 49.125 is a season-high for the team on bars and tied the meet after two rotations, 97.800-97.800.
Junior Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill-Carl Sandburg) continues to have a stellar season on beam, as she scored a 9.875 to lead the squad and earn another first place finish. Crossen hit 9.800 to claim second, while Parris earned a career-best score of 9.775 and placed third, giving EMU a clean sweep in the event. A pair of 9.700s came from senior Brianna Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) and sophomore Mickayla Stuckey (Union City, Ind.-Indiana Connections Academy). The Green and White earned a 48.850 on beam, bringing the team score to 146.650, but fell behind the Golden Flashes' total of 147.125 heading into the fourth event.
Entering the final rotation, Satler led the comeback charge, hitting a career-best 9.900 to earn second on floor. Roberts and junior Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) both scored 9.850s, tying for fifth. Boris saw a second personal-best score in the meet, earning a 9.825 to tie for seventh overall. Rondeau contributed a 9.750 as the Green and White totaled 49.175 in the event. The squad's score was enough to complete the comeback over KSU, 195.825-195.650.
The Eagles travel to DeKalb, Ill. next to compete in a Mid-American Conference matchup against Northern Illinois Friday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. CT.
