ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University track & field program put on a strong showing in its final indoor regular season meet at the GVSU Big Meet, Friday, Feb. 12, inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. The meet featured a large array of talent from around the country, and from all three NCAA divisions as well as NAIA.

From Division I, EMU was accompanied by Ball State, Central Michigan, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, Indiana State, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, and Western Illinois. Among the Division II counterparts were Ashland, Davenport, Ferris State, host Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, Illinois-Springfield, Indianapolis, Lake Superior State, Lewis, Malone, Northwood, Queens University of Charlotte, Tiffin, Saginaw Valley State, Walsh, and Wingate.

Calvin University and Hope College were the only Division III opponents. Also making the trip was Kentucky Christian and Shawnee State from the NAIA ranks.

"It was a solid meet for us," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. The throwers and the men's distance runners continue to shine and we are seeing improvement in all of the other event areas. We still have work to do before the MAC meet but we feel like we're headed in the right direction to be at our best at Central Michigan in two weeks."

For the Eagles, it was senior thrower Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) who had a career day. In the weight throw, Clarke registered an EMU record toss of 19.82m, nearly .5m further than her previous best (19.37m) that she set at the MAC Indoor Championships last year, Feb. 28, 2020. While she placed second in the weight throw, the Jamaica native also finished third in the shot put with a 14.60m heave.

Elsewhere in the field, graduate student Alisha St. Louis (D'abadie, Trinidad and Tobago-St. Francois Girls College (Johnson C. University)) took third in the triple jump title with a leap of 11.69m. Meanwhile, senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-St. Mary's (Texas Southern)) finished in second in the high jump with a 1.73m leap.

On the track, the Green and White dominated the 4x400 with its crew consisting of junior Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer), graduate student Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), and juniors Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) and Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child). The squad captured first place in a blazing 3:47.33, the fastest relay time by EMU thus far in the indoor season.

Sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) won the 60m dash in 7.54 seconds, flirting her career-high of 7.50. Additionally, junior Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) finished third in the 60m hurdles with an 8.59 clip.

On the men's side, junior Roland Miles (Coatesville Pa.-Coatesville (Shippensburg)) had a solid 6.84-second performance in the 60m dash, good for second place. In the 60m hurdles, juniors Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) and Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton) finished second (8.23) and fourth (8.26), respectively.

Sophomore Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer (Coastal Carolina)) captured the 400m crown with a red hot 48.50 clip, a personal-best in the event. Meanwhile, after a huge performance last weekend, junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) upped his game once more, this time winning the mile run in a career-best 4:04.48 time. Redshirt sophomore Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron) also recorded a personal-best in the mile (4:08.65), as he rounded-out the top-five in the event.

Additionally, freshman Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste") (8:26.43), and redshirt sophomores Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth) (8:18.27), Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge) (8:27.76), and Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) (8:30.08) all recorded career-highs in the 3000m.

In the 5000m, redshirt sophomore Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) paced all Eagles with a career-high time of 14:08.01 for eighth place. The Ohio native's mark is over 30 seconds quicker than his previous best (14:39.13) that he set at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 7, 2020. Classmate Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) finished just behind Payne for ninth, as he crossed the finish line in a personal-best 14:08.65. The New Zealand product beat his best indoor 5K time by over a minute (15:16.25), which he also set at last year's Meyo Invitational.

In the field, freshman Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa.-Coatesville) recorded a best in the high jump with a distance of 2.02m for second place. Junior Dahndray Holmes (Clarkesville, Tenn.-Rossview (Highland C.C.) also finished in second for the triple jump with a 13.05m leap.

The weight throwers had another spectacular outing as they swept the podium inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. Senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) paced the Eagles with a 22.09m heave, while sophomore Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qatar-Aspire Academy) (21.51m) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) (21.00) finished second and third, respectively. For Bedoui, he registered a new personal-best in the event, beating his 21.45m mark from last weekend.

In the shot put, senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College) placed runner-up with a distance of 17.60m. Bryant recorded a career-high 13.62m in the event during the second flight.

Up next: the Mid-American Conference indoor championships, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27. Central Michigan University will host the conference meet inside the Indoor Athletic Complex at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

On the women's side, they look to defend their title after taking home the coveted conference trophy last year, as they edged Northern Illinois 104-102. Meanwhile, the men finished second at the MAC indoor championships last season, falling to first place Akron 165.50-145.
