Volleyball Falls, 3-1, to Toledo in Saturday Matinee

Samantha Basham records ninth-straight match with double-digit kills
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team took the first set, but could not hang on and ultimately fell in four sets (25-22, 18-25, 16-25, 10-25) to the University of Toledo Rockets, today, Nov. 6, inside Savage Arena.
The loss dropped EMU's record to 9-17 overall and 4-11 in MAC play.
Sophomore Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic) finished with 14 kills on the day to lead the Eagles attack. Defensively, the Green and White had two players reach double figures in digs as sophomore Kamryn Stilwell (Parma, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) had 16 while freshman Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forrest Hills Northern) added 10. From the front row, redshirt freshman Krista Blakely (Detroit, Mich.-University High School Academy) contributed five blocks.
Game Notes
» Basham produced 14 kills, marking her ninth-straight match with double-digit kills.
» Eastern Michigan produced more blocks than Toledo, 9-4.
» Blakely's five blocks gives her 17 multi-block performances this season.
» With a team-leading 16 digs, Stilwell now has 19 outings this season with at least 15 digs.
» Eastern Michigan attackers were helped by a team-high 29 assists from sophomore Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge).
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles endured a back-and-forth first set to win 25-22 in a stanza that featured eight lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the match. EMU got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked six Toledo attacks and capitalized on 11 UT attacking errors on the way to victory.
SET 2 | Eastern Michigan then fell in set two, 25-18, evening things at one set each. Toledo grabbed the advantage for good at 15-14 in a set that was knotted up six times before the Rockets took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 3 | A set-three loss put Eastern Michigan down two sets to one. The Eagles lost the first point and never took the lead before losing the set 25-16.
SET 4 | Eastern Michigan lost the fourth set and the match, falling 25-10. The Eagles fell behind on the first point and could not complete a comeback as Eastern left Toledo without a win.
