EVANSVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University cross country program put forth a solid effort at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet today, Nov. 12, in Evansville, Ind. Hosted by the University of Evansville at its Angel Mounds Cross Country Course, EMU saw two Eagles earn all-region status.
"It was a good day for us," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "The women bounced back from disappointment two weeks ago and beat three conference teams that were ahead of us at the MAC meet without one of our top runners. I am proud of the team for battling hard after the adversity we faced at the conference meet. The men had a great showing and mixed it up with some nationally ranked teams. The future is bright for the team as most of the group returns next year. It was great to see Vinny and Toby make All-Region for the first time. We will wait to see if Vinny gets a bid to NCAA's once the at-large teams are decided."
"The guys all competed hard for 10,000 meters today and that's all we ask of them," said Head Coach Mark Rinker. "We competed and moved up throughout the race and I'm really proud of the guys and excited for the future! Toby had a breakthrough race to get all-region and we will wait to see tomorrow if Vinny gets an at-large spot for nationals."
The men earned a seventh-place team finish with 215 points and were paced by junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) and freshman Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College), placing 18th (30:10.6), and 19th (30:10.7).
The women's team notched 19th out of 31 scoring teams and was led by freshman Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, The Netherlands-American School of The Hague) who finished 82nd with a personal-best 6K time of 21:39.2. Her time was more than a fifteen-second improvement from her previous best of 21:55.4, which she set at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Oct. 30.
Junior Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina-St. Matthew's College) also crushed her career-high in the 6K, crossing the finish line in 21:44.5 for 89th.

- Regional finish
- Wins (points) against teams already in the championship
- Head-to-head competition between teams under consideration
- Records of the teams under consideration against common opponents
- Top individuals on the team under consideration
From each NCAA regional meet, the first four student-athletes, not on a qualifying team, to finish will be automatic qualifiers to the NCAA championships meet. All individual automatic qualifiers must finish in the top 25 within their region.
