YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Led by a pair of top-five finishes, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team won the Fourth Annual Shirley Spork Invitational on its home course at Eagle Crest Golf Club Tuesday, Oct. 5. The Eagles posted a final round 312 to cap the tournament with a 54-hole tally of 899 (290-297-312), the 13th-lowest total in program history.
The Eagles became the first repeat champion in the brief history of the Spork Invitational. EMU won the event in 2019 with a score of 899 before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 tournament. Overall, the victory marked the 25th title in the program's history and the first for the Eagles since the 2019-20 campaign. Also, it marked the fourth team championship during Head Coach Stephanie Jennings' tenure.
More history was made for the home team, as Eastern Michigan has now posted three consecutive championship or runner-up showings to begin the 2021-22 campaign. It marks the first such occurrence in the 26-year history of the program.
EMU entered the day with a nine-shot edge over Central Michigan to begin the day. However, the Chippewas made it a battle for a majority of the day, with a final round 901 to finish two strokes behind EMU. Akron (913), Green Bay (916) and Western Michigan (918) rounded of the top-five, followed by Oakland (924), Detroit Mercy (928), Youngstown State (932), Dayton (935), Bowling Green (949), and Ohio (956).
Western Michigan's Alissa Fish ran away with the individual title, finishing 11 strokes ahead of her nearest competitor. Fish shot a six-under 210 (69-71-70) to finish ahead of BGSU's Kayla Davis at 221 (76-72-73).
