EMU Shows Continuous Improvement at Mountaineer Invite

Sophomore MJ Smith picked up his first career top-10 finish at two-under 214

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind the solid play of sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago), the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished in a tie for sixth place at the Mountaineer Invitational with a 54-hole mark of 884 (303-295-286) Tuesday, Oct. 5, on the par-72 Pete Dye Golf Club.
Smith finished 10th with a two-under par 214 (73-72-69) for his first career top-10 showing. The Rockford, Ill. native notched four birdies during the final round, including posting a two-under 34 on the back nine. Additionally, the three-day tally was a career-low for Smith, breaking the standard he set just last week at the Badger Invitational, Sept. 26-28.
EMU was one of just two teams in the tournament to showcase round-over round improvement, shaving off eight strokes off the first round and nine shots off its second round tally. West Virginia was the other team to do so, posting scores of 297, 284, and 275 to finish second. The Mountaineers tied the school record for 18 holes with a final round score of 13-under-par.
No. 8 NC State won the event with a 855 (290-280-285) at nine-under-par. WVU finished ahead of Penn State (-7), Drexel (+4), Marshall (+18), Eastern Michigan (+20), Maryland (+20), George Mason (+23), Xavier (+30), Bowling Green (+34), Ohio (+49) and Eastern Kentucky (+55).
WVU's Mark Goetz shot a career-low 63, one shy of the school record, on the final day to win the event. His three-day total of 202 (69-70-63=202) for 14-under-par was the lowest three-round total in school history.
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) posted a season-best 220 (74-75-71) to tie for 23rd, while Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) added a 223 (78-71-74) for a tie for 35th. Rounding out the lineup, Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) and Cam Kellett (London, Ontario-Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada) added a 227 (78-77-72) and a 232 (81-77-74), respectively.
