Four Divers Named CSCAA All-Americans

The quartet are the first EMU diving All-Americans since 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team had four divers named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-American team for the 2019-20 season, the organization announced today, April 8. The four All-America selections are the most of all Mid-American Conference schools.
Each receiving the honor for the first time in their careers, the new All-Americans from EMU are: senior Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo), juniors Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) and Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green), and freshman Keira Veltigian (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford).
The four become the first CSCAA All-America divers for Eastern Michigan since Kelly Hendricks and Danielle Hulvey were named All-America First Team and Honorable Mention members, respectively, in 2013.
Tsafantakis completes her Eagle career having qualified for the Zone C Diving Championships in each of her four seasons. In 2019, she also posted EMU's best finish at the Zone C Championships with a 12th-place effort in the 3-meter dive, earning a combined two-round score of 560.35. The Michigan native is a two-time Second Team All-MAC honoree, most recently claiming a second-place finish in 3-meter diving with a score of 302.22, and fourth-place finish in 1-meter at 278.07 at the 2020 MAC Championships.
Berger, a three-time Zone C Championships qualifier, finished 15th in the preliminary round of 1-meter diving with a 261.20 mark at the 2020 event, and advanced to the final round before the event was halted due to the cancellation of winter and spring championships. Additionally, Berger finished fifth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the 2020 MAC Championships, recording scores of 263.01 and 279.36, respectively. The junior also swept 1-meter and 3-meter events at Wayne State (Jan. 11) and Akron (Jan. 18), and recorded career-high scores of 304.20 in 1-meter and 305.85 in 3-meter this season.
Also a three-time Zone C Championships qualifier, Schempf concluded the 2020 Zone C Championships in 32nd place with a score 240.80 in the preliminary round of 1-meter diving, which marked her career-best finish at the event.The Ohio native also claimed third place in 1-meter diving (278.07) and fourth place in 3-meter diving (285.96) at the 2020 MAC Championships. She holds career-best marks of 289.95 and 285.96 in 1-meter and 3-meter events, respectively.
Veltigian qualified for the Zone C Championships in her first season as an Eagle. The freshman finished 45th overall in 1-meter diving with a mark of 222.30. In her first apperance at the MAC Championships, Veltigian scored 227.85 for 15th place in the 1-meter event and 222.75 in the preliminary round of 3-meter diving. The Michigan native recorded season-best marks of 267.65 in the 3-meter dive at Denison Invite (Dec. 5) and 264.15 in the 1-meter dive at Akron (Jan. 18).
