YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team was unable to overcome a slow start, as it fell to Northern Illinois University, Feb. 7, 196.125-194.375. The Eagles honored four seniors for their contributions to Eastern Michigan gymnastics, Ella Dover, Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), Xarria Lewis (Columbia, Mo.-Hickman (Missouri)), and Megan Benzie (Roanoke, Va-Cave Springs).
"It was a very special night for our seniors." said Head Coach Katie Minasola "It was great have them compete one last time inside the Convocation Center. Although we didn't come away with the win, we did have some great performances, including another strong night on beam. I am excited to build and learn from this as we get back into the gym and improve for next week."
Eastern started the day on vault and was led by the duo of junior Jada Rondeau (Savage, Minn.-Central) and sophomore Kara Roberts (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney), both scoring 9.775 and tying for fifth. The pair were followed by the team captains, Dobronics and junior Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline), who both scored 9.750. Freshman Hannah Hartung (Lincoln, Neb.-Lincoln East) rounded out the scoring five, hitting 9.700. The Green and White ended the first rotation with an overall score of 48.750, slightly behind NIU's score of 48.825.
Moving over to bars, Rondeau continued to pace the Eagles, tying her career-high of 9.850 and taking first place. The junior was followed by fellow classmate Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick), who earned a 9.825, placing third in the event. Roberts added a score of 9.750 but EMU could not catch up as they ended the second rotation trialing the Huskies, 96.425-97.825.
The Green and White picked it up on beam, tying their season-best of 49.225 on the event. Sophomore Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) hit a career-high 9.900 to lead EMU and tie for first place. She was followed by a career-high from Brianna Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) of 9.875, which was good to tie for fourth. Rondeau added a score of 9.875 herself, tying her career-best. Dobronics added a 9.825 to earn eighth and freshman Mickayla Stuckey (Union City, Ind-Indiana Connections Academy) scored 9.750 to round out the scoring five. At the end of three rotations, the Eagles trailed 145.650-146.800.
Finishing Senior Night on floor, captain and senior, Dobronics led the squad with a score of 9.850, tying for first. Stuckey scored a new personal-best 9.775 tying for fourth in the event, while Rondeau earned a 9.750, good for seventh. Roberts and Price both added scores of 9.675 as EMU was unable to complete the comeback, falling to Northern Illinois, 194.375-196.125.
Next, the Eagles head to the University of Georgia to participate in a triangular with host-Georgia and Mid-American Conference foe-Ball State. The action will take place Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. Follow at @EMUGym or go to EMUEagles.com for all things Eastern Michigan gymnastics.
