Eagles Wrap Up Day One of Mid-American Conference Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team began the 2020 Mid-American Conference Championships tonight, Feb. 26, at the University at Buffalo Alumni Arena Pool. Through two events, the Eagles sit in fourth place with 58 points. The University of Akron leads the field with 80 points.

Senior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South), junior Elli Machado (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township), junior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley), and senior Rachel Stark (Avon, Ohio-Avon) earned 30 points for Eastern with a fourth-place, 1:40.34 time in the 200 yard medley relay to start the meet.

In the final event of the night, junior Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego), senior Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline), junior Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor), and junior Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) combined for a 7:18.90 mark in the 800 yard freestyle relay, good for fifth place.

The competition will resume tomorrow morning, Feb. 27, with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:37 p.m. Thursday's events will feature the 500 yard freestyle, 200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, and 1-meter diving.
