Tennis Splits Tuesday Doubleheader with Temple and Morgan State

EMU avenged a morning loss with a thrilling win at MSU
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. /BALTIMORE, MD (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team was back in action for two matches against Temple, and Morgan State, today, Feb. 25.
Eastern (6-6) recovered from a morning setback to the Owls with an impressive 5-2 victory at Morgan State. The win elevated Eastern's overall record to 6-6 on the season.
Match One: EMU 2, Temple 5
The morning match, between EMU and Temple, saw the Green and White claim victory in just two matches, at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Senior Marie Mayerova (Kremlin, Czech Republic) defeated Temple's Oyku Boz in a hard-fought three-set match (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) before teammate, junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Algappa Marticulation School) was able to upend Rine Nozaki, 6-1, 7-5.
After the top two singles flights, the rest of their matches with the Owls. Freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire Sur I'adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) and junior transfer Morgan Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.- Grace Academy) both forced third sets in their matches, but were unable to close in for wins.
The doubles team of Ingram and Pommiers put on a strong display in their match, as they earned five games in the No. 3 slot, but ultimately fell, 7-5.
Following the match, the team hit the road for a quick second-match turnaround in Baltimore, MD, where the squad faced Morgan State. The drive from Philadelphia to Baltimore is nearly 150 miles.
Match Two: EMU 5, Morgan State 2
After a disappointing morning, Eastern flipped the script on Morgan State to earn its sixth win of the season. The Eagles outhit the Bears to the tune of a 5-2 final score.
EMU took four singles matches as the No. 1, 2, 4, and 6 spots, respectively. Mayerova and Ganesan cruised to their second wins of the day as they turned in 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-4 performances, respectively. Pommiers allowed just five games in her match as the No. 4 spot as she earned a win via a 6-3, 6-2 decision. Sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) joined-in on the fun with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (tiebreak) win at No. 6 singles.
The doubles pairing of Mayerova and Piatek won its match, 6-0, which helped Mayerova complete a perfect 18-0 match in terms of single games. Ganesan and freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) also earned a victory.
"We played with great energy all day," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "We gave ourselves chances to win and were able to win the critical points against Morgan State. Both matches were important and meaningful in their ability to provide our team with a competitive experience."
The Eagles return to action with a pair of matches against Duquesne, and Niagra. Match one will get underway at 10 a.m., in Pittsburgh.
