EMU beat SFU, 5-2, before besting Niagra, 4-1

EBENSBURG, Pa. / YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team cruised to a pair of victories as it squared off with both Saint Francis University and Niagra University today, Feb. 29. EMU defeated SFU, 5-2, before handing Niagra a 4-1 setback.

EMU (8-6) has now won three consecutive matches for the first time this season, and has moved its record to two games above the .500 mark for the 2020 campaign.

"We did not play with great energy in our first match, but found a way to dig deep and earn a win over a very well-coached and well-prepared Saint Francis team," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a better job of bringing intensity against Niagra and did well to quickly secure the 4-1 win."

Match one: EMU 5, SFU 2

EMU's first match of the day took place near the campus of Saint Francis, at the Ebensburg Tennis Center in Ebensburg, Pa.

EMU dropped two of three matches in doubles, and was unable to earn a point in the duo event, but ultimately outmatched the Red Flash in the singles portion of the competition. The Eagles took five of the six singles flights to secure the win.

Senior Marie Mayerova (Kremlin, Czech Republic), freshmen Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) and Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire Sur I'adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau)junior transfer Morgan Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.- Grace Academy), and sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) each secured victories at the No. 1, and No. 3-6 spots, respectively. Mayerova's win was her team-leading 11th of the season. The five singles points were enough to earn EMU the team victory, 5-2.

Despite not earning the team point in doubles, the team of Mayerova and Piatek were able to secure a decisive 6-1 victory over SFU's No. 1 pairing of Lucia Seigford and Laura Gutierrez.

Match 2: EMU 4, Niagra 1

After an impressive morning win, EMU was even more dominant in its second match of the day. The Eagles were able to discard of Niagra by the score of 4-1, making quick work of the Buffalo, N.Y.-based school.

Mayerova added another victory in her second singles affair of the day, this time over the Purple Eagles' Andreea Peteu (6-0, 6-0). After a disappointing loss to Saint Francis' No. 2 singles opponent, junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Algappa Marticulation School) got back in the win column with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Niagra's Erika Gonzalez. Piatek also notched a win, her second of the day.

EMU was impressive in doubles action as well, where Mayerova and Piatek again cruised to victory, 6-1. The pairing of Ingram and Pommiers joined in on the fun as well as they dominated Niagra's No. 3 pairing, 6-0.

Three matches, two singles and one doubles bout, were unfinished as the Eagles had already clinched victory with the 4-1 score.

Eastern is back in action with a match against Youngstown State University, tomorrow, Feb. 29, at the Youngstown State Tennis Complex. Stay tuned to EMUEagles.com for the most up-to-date information and results.
