Eagles' Third-Quarter Push Not Enough Against Akron

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team nearly erased a 14-point, third-quarter deficit against the University of Akron, but ultimately dropped a 64-53 decision to the Zips Saturday, Feb. 14, inside the Convocation Center.
Exactly two weeks after the Eagles (12-12, 7-6 MAC) fell on the road to the Zips (11-12, 4-8 MAC) in overtime, 88-81, Akron earned its first road win in Mid-American Conference play this season while EMU was unable to extend its run of two consecutive victories.
Redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) reached the 20-point mark for the third consecutive game and fourth time in her last five outings, scoring a team-high 23 points while adding seven rebounds, a pair of steals, and all four of EMU's assists. Meanwhile, junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) tallied eight points, a team-high 11 boards, and one steal, while redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) added eight points off the bench along with seven boards and a steal.
EMU finished the afternoon 25.4 percent (16-of-63) from the floor, while Akron ended the contest with a 39.7 percent (23-of-58) field-goal efficiency. The Green and White out-rebounded the Zips, 48-45, and recorded more points in the paint (30-18), second-chance points (14-8), steals (7-5), and blocks (3-1) than their MAC East counterparts.
The Eagles trailed by three during the opening couple of minutes, but Combs banked home a layup before redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield) split a pair of free throws to knot the score at seven with 6:47 left in the opening quarter. Cardwell made both of her attempts from the charity stripe to make it a 9-9 contest with 4:30 to go in the first frame, but the Zips ended the period on a 10-2 run.
EMU tried to get back into the game after head coach Fred Castro called a full timeout, using a 7-2 run to close the gap to 29-20 with 5:47 left in the second quarter. However, a corner three from sophomore Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) marked the Eagles' last field goal of the opening half as the hosts took a 37-24 deficit into the locker room.
The Eagles faced their largest deficit of the afternoon to that point, 42-28, with 8:17 to go in the third, but rallied with a 12-0 run to move within a single possession. Hudson added a layup while drawing contact, before Agosto went 2-for-2 at the line to cut the deficit to 42-35 with left in the third. Combs then made two free throws of her own, before Cardwell banked home a shot to make it 42-40, prompting the Zips to burn a timeout with 5:27 left in the third. Combs drew contact later in the quarter on a successful layup to make it a one-point game, 45-44, with 2:23 to go in the frame, but the Zips pulled away from there to secure an 11-point result.
Eastern looks to get back in the win column when it returns to the Convocation Center Saturday, Feb. 22 to host MAC West foe Ball State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
