YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team made a massive step toward earning a first-round bye in the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 61-58 victory over Ball State University Saturday, Feb. 22 inside the Convocation Center.
The Eagles (13-12, 8-6 MAC), who are currently fourth in the MAC standings, have won three of their last four games overall, and three of four head-to-head meetings against Cardinals (18-8, 10-4 MAC) since the start of the 2018-19 campaign.
Redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield) ended the afternoon one point shy of her first career double-double, tallying nine points while pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds, including a half-dozen on the offensive glass. She also tied her personal best with three steals and dished out a pair of assists.
A trio of Eagles reached double-figures in points, as redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) scored a team-high 15 points along with nine boards and two helpers, while fellow redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) netted 14 points, four rebounds, and a team-best three assists. Meanwhile, junior Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) notched 11 points, including three triples, while junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) added seven points and seven rebounds.
Both squads shot 33.9 percent from the field, and each team converted six attempts from beyond the arc. EMU got the better of Ball State in steals (10-5), second-chance points (13-7), points in the paint (20-18), and assists (7-5).
After Ball State grabbed their largest lead of the game, 18-9, with 8:02 left in the opening half, the Eagles stormed back to knot the score at 20 apiece. Lewis' first three-pointer of the game capped an 11-2 EMU run with 3:59 left in the second quarter. Lewis knocked down another triple to give the Green and White a 29-26 leading during the final minute of the second stanza, but the Cardinals responded with a deep three of their own during their final possession of the first half.
Ahead 40-38 with fewer than five minutes to go in the third quarter, the Eagles proceeded to open up a six-point cushion. Cardwell knocked down a pair of free throws, before Hudson nailed a jumper to give the Eagles a 44-38 advantage with 3:21 left in the frame.
Ball State rallied to cut the deficit to one, 44-43, by the end of the third quarter, and eventually reclaimed its lead with 3:27 left in regulation. Behind 55-54, Lewis knocked down a vital corner three to put the Eagles back in front, before Agosto went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to make it 59-55 with 2:31 remaining in the fourth quarter. Ball State responded with a three-ball to make it a one-point game with 1:35 on the clock, but Cardwell padded EMU's lead with a pair of free throws as the home side used two last-minute steals to keep the Cardinals off the board.
