Sweet Victory: Eagles Edge In-State Rival Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program earned its third win in the last four Mid-American Conference games, downing in-state rival Central Michigan, 73-70, Tuesday, Feb. 11 inside CMU's McGuirk Arena. The victory is the Eagles' (13-11; 3-8 MAC) first road MAC win of the season.
The Chippewas (13-10; 6-4 MAC) cut the Eagles' lead to two (71-69) with 8 ticks left in the game, but redshirt junior Ty Groce (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln) and classmate Noah Morgan (Mount Vernon, N.Y.-Mount Vernon (Northwest Florida State)) split a pair of free throws each to seal the 73-70 victory.
Groce posted his first career double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists in 38 minutes. Redshirt senior Boubacar Toure (Dakar, Senegal-Phase One Academy (Grand Canyon)) also earned a double-double with 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting and 13 rebounds, while junior Thomas Binelli (Bologna, Italy- (Monroe College)) added 15 points and tied a career-high with five three-pointers. Morgan finished the evening with 14 points and went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The Eagles shot 49.1 percent from the field (26-of-53) and made 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc, compared to CMU's 46.7 percent clip (14-of-30) from deep. EMU held the advantage at the free throw line, shooting 78.9 percent (15-of-19).
Eastern Michigan outrebounded Central Michigan, 36-28, and outscored the Chippewas in the following categories:, points in the paint (40-14), second chance points (16-5), bench points (14-5), and points off turnovers (27-24).
It was a back-and-forth battle of three-pointers to open up the game, but Eastern Michigan went on a 16-9 run over the first nine minutes of the contest. The EMU stint featured four Binelli three-pointers to give the junior 12 points in the first half. The Chippewas responded with a 16-5 run to take the five-point lead, 28-23, at the 7:19 mark of the first half. CMU continued to spark the offense as it went into the locker room with a 35-28 advantage.
Eastern Michigan came out of the locker room strong and cut Central Michigan's lead to 42-40 with a Groce dunk at the 13:53 mark of the final stanza. Then, the Eagles posted an 8-2 run highlighted by two Toure slams to take a 46-45 lead with 12 minutes left. Over the next eight minutes, the scoring went back-and-forth as the Chippewas came within one with 4:12 minutes left. But, Morgan's and-one play with 1:43 left on the clock propelled the Eagles to an eight-point lead (65-57). However, Central Michigan wasn't giving up; the Chippewas came back within two (71-69) off a David DiLeo triple, but the Eagles finished the game at the charity stripe to seal the win.
The Green and White will begin a two-game homestand Saturday, Feb. 15 by welcoming the Western Michigan University Broncos to the Convocation Center. The MAC West matchup will be the second game of an EMU doubleheader and is scheduled to tipoff at 2:30 p.m.
