Baldvin Magnusson Named MAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week

The Akureyri, Iceland native shattered his personal-best 3K time at last weekend's Meyo Invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore harrier Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today, Feb. 11. This marks the first weekly honor in Magnusson's collegiate career, and the third weekly award for the men's track and field program this season.

Magnusson leads the MAC in the 3,000-meter run after shattering his personal-best mark at the Meyo Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame last Saturday, Feb. 8. The Akureyri, Iceland native finished as the runner-up in the Ryan Shay 3K race with a MAC Auto Qualifying time of 8:03.28, a mark that paces the conference by more than 14 seconds. For perspective, Magnusson's previous career-best in this event came at last season's GVSU Big Meet, where he placed 22nd overall with a time of 8:28.09, Feb. 8, 2018,

Additionally, Magnusson currently ranks second in the conference in the mile. He made his season debut at the Can-Am International, Jan. 25, at Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Field House, and claimed first prize in the mile run with a time of 4:11.11.

Eastern returns to competition Friday, Feb. 14 as it heads to Allendale, Mich. to compete at the GVSU Big Meet inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. Running events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., while field events are expected to start at 12 p.m.
