Heartbreak in Akron: Women's Hoops Falls to Zips in OT After Amazing Comeback

The team erased a six-point fourth quarter deficit to force extra time
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – A free throw make with 0:001 on the clock by redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield) tied the game between the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team and Mid-American Conference East Division member the University of Akron at 76 apiece, today, Feb. 1. Although the freebie helped EMU complete a six-point fourth quarter comeback and force overtime, it was unable to overcome the hot shooting of the Zips, who eventually pulled out an 88-81 overtime victory inside James A. Rhodes Arena.
Down, 74-72, with 19 seconds left in regulation, the Eagles secured a steal on an Akron out-of-bounds play, leading to a deep triple from junior Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton), which gave EMU the lead, 75-74, with 11 ticks remaining. After a Zips bucket, the Eagles found themselves with a chance to win the game in the closing seconds. Although it couldn't hit a game-winning field goal, Agosto was able to draw a foul with 0:001 on the clock, sending her to the line for a pair of free throws, which she split to send the game to OT.
The overtime period was controlled by Akron, as they outscored EMU, 12-5, in the five-minute period, eventually winning the contest, 88-81. Eastern (10-10; 5-4 MAC) is now .500 on the season, but remains one game above an even ledger in league play.
Agosto paced the Eagles with a career-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, another career-best. Great from start-to-finish, she scored four of the Eagles' final five buckets of the contest. Redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) was outstanding as well, tallying her second straight double-digit scoring performance with a season-best 16 point performance. Lewis finished the day with a 15-point effort, which ties for her second-highest point total of the 2019-20 campaign. In total, five Eagles scored in double-figures.
The pace was fast and furious to begin the game, as 27 total points were scored before the clock stopped for the contest's first media timeout. Cardwell had the hot hand early, scoring five of the Eagles' first 11 points. Down, 16-11, with 3:00 remaining, EMU got a much-needed spark from redshirt sophomore RayJon Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid), who quickly hauled in a rebound and hit two shots to notch her best scoring performance in her last seven outings, dating back to Dec. 18. Agosto led all scorers with seven first-frame points. She finished the half with a team-best nine points on 3-of-3 shooting.
Despite the first quarter production, Eastern found itself in a three-point hole, 23-20, at the start of the second quarter. The Eagles quickly erased that deficit as they outscored Akron, 9-5, to begin the frame, taking a 29-28 lead with 5:45 remaining in the half. That run featured four points from redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)), and also saw sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) notch a three-point make. A resilient Akron squad had no trouble rallying back as it outscored Eastern, 14-6, in the final minutes of the second quarter to take a 42-35 advantage into the locker room.
The quick-hitting speed of EMU stifled Akron out of the break, and the Eagles needed just 3:25 to tie the game at 45 apiece. With the score still tied, Annecchiarico picked the pocket of an UA guard, finishing the play on the offensive end of the court to give EMU the lead, 47-45. The back-and-forth continued throughout the third, a quarter that saw three ties and three lead changes. Down a bucket, 53-50, with time running down, Cardwell drained a triple to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter.
An entertaining final frame of regulation was highlighted by the events with under one minute to play. Although EMU was eventually bested in the overtime segment, its scrappy effort and ability to climb back from behind on numerous occasions was impressive.
Agosto and the rest of the Eagles will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 5, as they welcome MAC East-foe Ohio University to the Convocation Center. Tipoff from the Ypsilanti, Mich.-venue is set for 7 p.m. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU women's basketball, visit EMUEagles.com or follow the team on social media at @EMUWBB.
