– The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team battled Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan University in its home opener, Jan. 19, at the Convocation Center. The Chippewas ultimately defeated the Eagles, 195.100-194.175.

"It was great to be back in our home arena," said Head Coach Katie Minasola "I was proud of how we came together after a mishap on vault. We were able to keep our energy up throughout the entirety of the meet. With that said, we need to work on the details and polish things up on floor."

Starting the afternoon with vault, Eastern led Central, 48.525-48.225 after the first rotation. Junior Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) led the Eagles with a 9.750 mark, followed by sophomore Kara Roberts (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney), who posted a season-best mark of 9.750. Senior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) scored a 9.700 for EMU, while freshman Hannah Hartung (Lincoln, Neb.-Lincoln East) made her season debut in the event with a 9.675 mark. Rounding out the scoring five was sophomore Carly Kosanovich (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), who reached 9.650 on the vault.

Transitioning to the second rotation, Central Michigan took the lead, 97.375-97.300. Junior Cortney Bezold's (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) 9.850 not only paced the Eagles, but tied for first on the event as well. Harden and classmate Jada Rondeau (Savage, Minn.-Central) each posted a 9.750.

On beam for the third rotation, Dobronics earned the top score for EMU hitting 9.775. Price and Rondeau each scored 9.750. The Chippewas extended their lead, 146.100-145.750, after three events.

Eastern Michigan closed the meet on floor. Dobronics posted a 9.800 for the top score for the Eagles, while Roberts and freshman Mickayla Stuckey (Union City, Ind.-Connections Academy) each tied their season-best scores with 9.775 and 9.575 marks, respectively. Sophomore Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) added a score of 9.675. The Eagles were unable to catch up to Central and fell, 195.100-194.175, in their second meet of the season.

The lone all-around competitor for the Green and White, Roberts scored 38.875, good for third place overall.

The Eagles will continue their homestand, welcoming their other in-state foe, Western Michigan. The meet will take place at the Convocation Center Friday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. and will serve as Epilepsy Awareness Day in honor of our Team Impact teammate Ella Dover. Fans can catch the action on ESPN3.
