Eagles Post 13-Win Performance at Wayne State

Eastern Michigan won all events in the first dual meet of 2020
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team returned to competition Saturday, Jan. 11 against Wayne State at the Matthaei Natatorium, winning all 13 events and defeating the Warriors, 193-49. Eastern also picked up five podium sweeps.
Leading the way for the Eagles were juniors Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) and Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany), who each picked up two wins for EMU.
Berger won both 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, setting new career-best scores in each event at 291.22 and 305.85, respectively. Additionally, Berger met the NCAA Qualifying Standard in 3-meter diving and becomes the third Eagle diver to have met the qualifying standards in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving this season.
Staffeldt earned her first two wins of the season, clocking in at 52.83 in the 100 yard freestyle and 1:54.56 in the 200 yard freestyle for top-spot finishes. Freshman Savanna Mouat (Tecumseh, Ontario-All Saints) and junior Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) joined Staffeldt on the podium in the 200 free with times of 1:54.99 and 1:55.26, respectively.
Junior Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) earned her first freestyle win of the season in the 1,000 yard free event, also setting a new career-best with a time of 10:18.82. Also in the 1,000 free, junior Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) and Morgan Booth (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers) took second and third, respectively, with times of 10:27.13 and 10:40.42 to round out the podium sweep.
In the 400 yard individual medley, junior Carlee Jones (Edgewood, Ky.-Notre Dame Academy) claimed her first victory of the season with a 4:33.37 mark. Another podium sweep for the Eagles, senior Claire Young's (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) time of 4:33.68 was good for second place, while senior Sydney Thomas (Jamestown, N.Y.-Southwestern Senior) earned third place with her mark of 4:38.87.
Earning her first win the 100 yard butterfly this season, junior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) led the way for Eastern's fourth podium sweep of the afternoon. Staver clocked in at 57.74 for the top spot, followed by freshman Hannah White (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) in second place with a time of 58.50 and senior Marcella Da Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-Colegio Dom Bosco) in third at 58.88.
Rounding out the podium sweeps for EMU, Mouat, senior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville), and Hofmann took the top three spots in the 500 yard freestyle. Mouat won the event with a 5:04.46, time, followed by Gavigan at 5:09.84 and Hofmann at 5:11.18.
Also adding wins for Eastern Michigan were senior Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline) and junior Elli Machado (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township). Armstrong-Grant won the 50 yard freestyle in 24.82, while Machado took the top spot in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:05.58. Young added one more point-scoring effort for the Eagles, winning the 100 yard backstroke with a 57.70 mark.
Eastern Michigan will continue their road swing Saturday, Jan. 18 against Mid-American Conference foe Akron at the Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
