Redshirt Senior Cassie Haut paced the Eagles with a 10-kill match
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – On the court against a Mid-American Conference foe for the first time since winning the 2018 MAC tournament title, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a three-set match against I-94 rival Western Michigan University tonight, Sept. 27.
Unable to find traction early, Eastern found itself down quickly in the first set, falling behind, 10-6, before eventually dropping the frame, 25-16. Coming off a season-high 19-kill performance at Purdue, Sept. 21, redshirt senior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Central Catholic) again set the pace for the Eagles in the first set, registering four kills and hitting at an impressive .429 clip.
The Eagles found early momentum to begin the second set, taking an early 4-3 lead on the Broncos. After exchanging blows for the next handful of points, Western again overpowered EMU, eventually running out to an eight-point lead before winning the set by the same margin, 25-17. Consistent with the first frame, Haut led the Eagles with four kills. The Monroe, Mich. native finished with team-best 10 kills. After a quite first set, junior April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest) tallied three kills in the set. Freshman Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.- Prairie Ridge) picked up her third-career service ace as well.
Down two sets and undeterred, EMU fought to stay in the match in the third set. Close early, the Eagles were within striking distance during the early portion of the set, 9-7. Down five, 22-17, Eastern rallied to close the gap to a pair, 22-20, forcing WMU to call timeout. EMU tied the set out of the break, 22-22, before WMU claimed late victory, 25-22.
Eastern will have a chance to complete a quick turnaround as the team heads directly to DeKalb, Ill. to face Northern Illinois tomorrow, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. CT.
