Callaway enters her fourth season as an assistant at EMU
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Women's Basketball Assistant Coach Cassandra Callaway has been granted the title of recruiting coordinator along with her assistant coach duties, Head Coach Fred Castro announced Tuesday, Aug. 13.
"I am happy to announce the promotion of Cassandra to recruiting coordinator," Castro exclaimed. "She has done an excellent job enhancing our recruiting footprint within Michigan, Ohio, and the Midwest region, which is critical. Cassandra is one of the top young assistants in our game, and I am excited to see how she continues to positively impact our program."
Since arriving in Ypsilanti in May 2016, Castro and his staff have hit the recruiting trail hard, securing one of the top recruiting classes in the Mid-American Conference. This year's class features highly-touted high school recruits in Aaliyah Stanley and Constance Chaplin, along with Conference USA All-Freshman Team selection and Florida International transfer Ce'Nara Skanes.
"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to serve as the recruiting coordinator," Callaway added. "I want to thank Coach Castro for allowing me to grow into this new role and look forward to building on the momentum built by our team."
This past season, Callaway was crucial in the development of Corrione Cardwell. In her redshirt sophomore season, Cardwell proved to be Eastern's most consistent player as the only Eagle to start all 31 games. With the guidance of Callaway, Cardwell improved her scoring average by nearly 10 points, 3.7 to 13.0, and more than doubled her rebounding average (1.7 to 4.2).
The Green and White also saw the emergence of freshman Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin), as the floor general dished out a team-best 100 assists, the second-most by an Eastern freshman in two decades, while also becoming the first freshman to lead the MAC in assist-to-turnover ratio since the 2005-06 season.
Additionally, Danielle Minott was selected as an All-MAC Honorable Mention, becoming just the sixth player in program history to be named All-MAC multiple times in their career.
Callaway helped in the development of EMU's guards during the 2017-18 campaign. Most notably, she coached Minott and Courtnie Lewis to All-MAC honors. Minott, after rewriting the single-game record book, landed on the All-MAC Third Team, while Lewis put together one of the greatest freshman campaigns in program history. Lewis scored the second-most points by a freshman Eagle en route to All-MAC Honorable Mention and MAC All-Freshmen honors, while also finishing top-10 nationally in scoring among freshmen. Additionally, Callaway worked with Sasha Dailey, who finished her time in the Green and White ranked second in games played (131), tied for fifth in steals (243), seventh in field goal attempts (1,306), tied for 10th in field goals made (507) and steals average (1.9), and 15th in minutes played (3,018) and scoring (1,247).
