OTTOWA, Ontario (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University men's track and field student-athlete Payne Wylie (Saskatchewan, Canada-Colonsay School) has been selected to represent Canada at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships held in San José, Costa Rica, July 19-21, Athletics Canada announced in mid-June.
Wylie is one of 47 athletes (22 men and 25 women) selected to attend the biennial track and field competition, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019. The competition will feature athletes from 31 different countries throughout North and South America. The Saskatchewan, Canada native will compete in the 110-meter hurdles, one of 28 events the Canadian contingent will participate in during their time in San José.
"I am looking forward to the high level of competition and being part of a national team," said Wylie. "I have heard it is a great experience and I can not wait to be part of it. My time at Eastern has taught me how to handle pressure surrounding competition. I have put in the work and I have put myself in a solid position heading into Pan American Championships, but I'm going to keep pushing myself to be better. The only place to go is up."
Wylie comes off his first campaign donning the Green and White, which saw the hurdler place fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.39 at the Mid-American Conference outdoor track and field championships, while placing eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a career-best mark of 54.71. During the indoor season, Wylie competed in six meets, capped off by a fourth-place effort in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.15.
"Coach (Sterling) Roberts and I are very proud of Payne," noted Head Coach John Goodridge. "We believe he has a lot of exciting potential to develop with this incredible opportunity."
