EMU Alumni Stand Out at USATF Outdoor Championships

Three former Eagles collected four top-15 finishes at the National Championship event
DES MOINES, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) — Three alumni of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team competed at the 2019 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships Thursday through Sunday, July 25-28. The Green and White's former student-athletes' performances were highlighted by current volunteer assistant coach Donald Scott earning his second consecutive outdoor triple jump national title.
Scott, coached by current Eagles' assistant coach Sterling Roberts, leapt to a distance of 17.74m on his first attempt to secure the national title. His efforts not only marked a personal-best performance, but also secured the former All-American a spot in the upcoming International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar. The national title is Scott's fourth in the past two years, securing both the USATF indoor and outdoor championships in 2018 and 2019.
Also qualifying for the IAAF World Athletics Championships was alumni Solomon Simmons, who earned a second-place finish in the Decathlon with a personal-best point total of 8227. 2016 graduate Willy Fink competed twice throughout the weekend, earning ninth place in the 5,000m with a mark of 13:49.02 and an 11th-place finish in the 10,000m with a time of 28:45.7.
"It is always very special to see our alumni compete on the national and international scene," noted head coach John Goodridge. "On behalf of EMU, we salute their success at the U. S. National Championships."
