NEW ORLEANS (EMUEagles.com) -- Student athletes from the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team nabbed United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors for the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, the association announced Monday, July 22. Three EMU student-athletes were recognized for their efforts on and off the track during the 2018-19 season.
Earning the individual accolades for EMU were juniors Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) and Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), as well as track and field recent graduate Tyler Underwood. This was the second honor earned by both Richardson and Day, while it serves as the first for Underwood.
Day was honored for his efforts during the indoor season, as the sophomore was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 22-23, while also earning First Team All-MAC honors for his performances at the event. Day took home an individual championship in the mile with a time of 4:12.86 and also ran a leg of the Eagles' first-place finishing distance medley relay with a time of 10:04.61. His mile performance of 4:01.25 at the Meyo Invitational ranked 46th in the nation at the end of the regular indoor track season.
Qualifying for both the indoor and outdoor All-Academic team, Richardson concluded his sophomore season competing at the NCAA East Regionals in the 400m, May 23-25, earning a top-three time in the first round heats, and finishing 23rd overall with a time of 47.89 in the quarterfinals. The Basingstoke, England native ran in five meets for the Eagles, including the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 9-11, where he collected Second Team All-MAC honors for his two fourth-place finishes in the 200m and 400m and two second-place finishes running legs of the Eagles' 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. He qualified for the NCAA East Regionals with a second-place finish in the 400m at the Raleigh Relays, March 29-30, finishing the race in 46.40, the ninth-best 400m ran in program history.
Richardson's indoor season saw the sophomore compete in five meets for the Eagles, including the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 22-23, where he earned First Team All-MAC honors for his leg of the Eagles' MAC championship 4x400-meter relay team. At the same meet, he placed fourth and fifth in the 400m and 200m, clocking in with times of 47.54 and 21.33, respectively. Richardson's 400m mark of 47.21 set at the Meyo Invitational ranked 73rd nationally at the end of the regular season.
Also recognized for both his indoor and outdoor efforts this season, Underwood left his mark in the EMU record books during his last year donning the Green and White. He finished his career holding the program's fourth-best outdoor 400m time (46.00), fifth-best 200m indoor mark (21.18), and third-best indoor 400m effort (46.30), all achieved in the 2018-19 campaign. Named Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer for his efforts at the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 9-11, Underwood took home an individual conference championship in the 200m and a second place finish in the 400m, along with running legs of EMU's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay squads that both earned silver medals. He placed 21st overall in the 400m at the NCAA East Regionals, May 23-25, collecting a time of 46.98.
Underwood's indoor performances in 2018-19 were just as impressive, as the Clinton, Mich. native was named the 2019 Mid-American Conference Most Valuable Performer for his efforts at the league championships, Feb. 22-23, taking home two individual championships in the 200m and 400m with times of 21.18 and 46.30, respectively, while aiding the 4x400-meter relay to a conference championship. Both of those times ranked in the top-96 nationally at the end of the regular season, sitting 68th in the nation with his 200m run and 20th in the country with his 400m performance.
Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 583 men earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors during the 2018-19 track and field seasons.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, each student athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of two athletic standards.
For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
