Five EMU Men’s Golfers Collect Academic All-MAC Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team saw five of its student-athletes named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team the league office announced Monday, June 3. Senior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), junior Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin), and sophomores Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic), Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) and Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) each garnered the honor. For Breault, it was the third time he collected the honor, while the others picked up their first academic distinction from the conference.
A total of 30 student-athletes were named to the team from this past season. Eastern Michigan led this year's squad with five student-athletes, while Ball State, Northern Illinois, and Toledo followed close behind with four honorees.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Beault, a finance major, holds a 3.78 cumulative GPA and was recently named a recipient of the MAC's Medal of Excellence Award. The 2019 MAC Men's Golfer of the Year, Breault became just the third Eagle to capture the honor since it began in 1994 with a stellar senior season. The Hartland, Mich. native had five top-10 showings in 2018-19, with a MAC-leading average of 71.76.
Breault's 18-hole average ranks as the best single season mark in EMU history with 2,081 strokes in 29 rounds played. Named MAC Co-Golfer of the Week for the period ending March 22, Breault was the first EMU golfer since 2017 to earn MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honors when he collected the award on March 15 after placing 10th at the at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate. Breault closed out his career with a sixth-place finish at the MAC Championships, while also garnering First Team All-MAC honors.
Sudinsky, a communications major with a 3.23 GPA, averaged a 73.38 in 10 tournaments in 2018-19. He collected All-Tournament honors at the MAC Championship after taking fifth with a 145 (74-71). The McKinney, Texas native set his career-best outing with a 212 (67-72-73) at the EKU Intercollegiate to take ninth. He tied for seventh at the Firestone Invite with a 213 (73-69-71) and finished 14th at the Rutherford Intercollegiate with a three-over 217 (74-71-71).
Celone, who owns a 3.28 GPA in general business, ranked second in the league with a 71.93 stroke average, the second-best tally in EMU laurels. The First Team All-MAC selection, led the Green and White with 17 rounds of par-or-better and four top-10 showings.
A two-time MAC Golfer of the Week honoree, Celone spearheaded Eastern's first-place finish at the EKU Intercollegiate, placing third with a 206 (68-69-69). He recorded the third top-five finish of his career at the Firestone Invite, Oct. 1-2, taking second with a 209 (70-69-70), before carding a first-round 66 at the Hawkeye Invitational, April 20-21, to tie for the 11th-lowest single round in EMU history. The Long Sault, Ontario product finished tied for sixth with a 146 at the MAC Championships, April 27, to help Eastern to a share the conference title with Kent State.
Collins, who sports a 3.48 GPA in Sport Management, averaged a 73.10 in 10 tournament. The Caledon, Ontario, Canada native helped EMU tie Kent State for a share of the MAC Championship with a two-over 146 (70-76) in a tie for sixth. He had a season-best 214 (71-70-73) for 12th at the Rutherford Intercollegiate and fired a 218 (74-72-72) at the Colleton River Collegiate to take 15th. Collins tied for 17th at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate with a 221 (70-73-78) and notched a 216 (73-71-72) at the EKU Intercollegiate to tie for 23rd.
Rayman, a sophomore with a 3.44 GPA in finance, averaged a 77.17 in six tournaments. At the EKU Intercollegiate, he set his career low round at 69, while shooting a best 215 (72-74-69). The Otsego, Mich. native finished with a 224 (73-76-75) at the Firestone Invite.
Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's team finished with the lowest four-player team scoring average in school history at 289.1. The tally was 1.3 strokes ahead of the 2016-17 squad's mark of 290.4. Eastern Michigan finished in the top-five at six different tournaments this season, including a first-place finish at the EKU Raising Canes Intercollegiate, Sept. 15-16. Additionally, Eastern finished the regular season ranked 96th nationally with an 80-44-2 record with six top-100 victories and a pair of top-50 triumphs.
