Seven Eagles Named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes

6/28/2019 4:42:00 PM | Women's Rowing

490 Division I female student-athletes recognized for their success in the classroom and on the water

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Seven members of the Eastern Michigan University rowing team were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athletes, the association announced Thursday, June 27.

To be considered for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.5 grade point aveage (GPA) or higher, be in their sophomore year or later, and have rowed in one of their institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boats for 75 percent of the spring races or the regional conference event.

EMU's honorees for the 2018-19 season were: seniors Baylee Kinkade (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and Addison Oblanas (Seattle, Wash.-Seattle Academy),  juniors Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem), Karissa Fald (Carvel, Alberta-Memorial Composite), Karson Mahaney (Troy, Ohio-Miami East), and Ashly Matzek (Ellsworth, Wis.-Ellsworth), and sophomore Grace Burke (Coloma, Mich.-Benton Harbor). Each Eagle was also acknowledged by the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) earlier this season, placed on the Commissioner's Honor Roll for their efforts in the classroom during the Fall 2018 semester.

The Eagles were tied for the second-most awardees in the CAA with Drexel University and the University of Delaware, while Northeastern University led the conference with 13 selections and Villanova University rounded out the league's honorees with six nods.

Kinkade, a mathematics major from Portage, Mich., raced in five regattas throughout the 2018-19 season, primarily as a member of the First Varsity Eight boat. She aided all three Eagles' boats that earned CAA Boat of the Week honors for their efforts at the Cooper Invitational (April 7), Mason Invite (April 14), and MACRA Championships (April 28).

An All-CAA selection, Oblanas competed in six races as a member of the First Varsity Eight and Varsity Four boats. The Seattle, Wash. product was a member of all three EMU crews that earned CAA Boat of the Week honors for their first-place finishes at the Cooper Invitational (April 7) and MACRA Championships (April 28), and their second-place effort at the Mason Invite (April 14). In her final competition donning the Green and White, Oblanas helped the Eagles' to match the program's best-ever finish at the conference championships, placing third and totaling 19 points (May 19).

Another constant presence in the Eagles' First Varsity Eight boat, Dutton competed in six regattas during her junior campaign. She was part of the First Varsity Eight boat that recorded the program's best finish at the Head of the Hooch (Nov. 3), earning sixth place, while also aiding the First Varsity Eight boats that brought home wins at the Cooper Invitational (April 7) and the MACRA Championships (April 28), and a second-place finish at the Mason Invite (April 14). For each of the three aforementioned performances, the Eagles earned CAA Boat of the Week honors, the most of any conference boat throughout the 2018-19 season.

Fald raced in four regattas as a member of the Second Varsity Eight, Third Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four boats during the Eagles' 2018-19 scheduling. She was a member of the Third Varsity Eight cohort that finished first in the B final at the Mason Invite (April 14), and also aided the Eagles' Varsity Four to a fourth-place effort at the CAA Championships (May 19).

An exercise science major from Troy, Ohio, Mahaney competed in five races as a member of EMU's Second Varsity Boat, aiding the Second Varsity Eight crew to a runner-up finish at the CAA Championships (May 19). She was a part of the Second Varsity Eight squads that earned first-place marks in both the B final of the Mason Invite (April 14) and the Grand Final of the MACRA Championships (April 28).

A native of Ellsworth, Wis., Matzek raced in six regattas as a member of the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Second Varsity Four boats during the 2018-19 season. She was a part of both First Varsity Eight boats that earned top finishes at the Mason Invite (April 14) and the MACRA Championships (April 28), while also aiding the Second Varsity Eight boat to a runner-up effort at the CAA Championships (May 19). Additionally, Matzek helped the First Varsity Eight to the program's best-ever finish at the Head of the Hooch, marking a sixth-place performance  (Nov. 3).

The lone Eagles' sophomore named to the CRCA honor roll, Burke competed in five regattas for the Eagles, primarily as a member of the Second Varsity Eight boat. Alongside Matzek, she was a member of the Second Varsity Eight crew that earned a runner-up finish at the CAA Championships (May 19) and also aided the same boat to a first-place finish at the MACRA Championships (April 28).
