It is the first EMU duo to earn First Team All-MAC since 2010
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Fresh off a Mid-American Conference co-Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team saw two of its student-athletes named to the All-MAC teams the league office announced Friday, May 3. Senior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and sophomore Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) were both tabbed First Team All-MAC.
Breault and Celone are the first EMU duo named First Team All-MAC since Cam Burke and Marty Jeppesen did so in 2010. Additionally, it is the first time an Eagle has earned all-conference honors since Brett White was a second team selection in 2016.
The 2019 MAC Golfer of the Year, Breault led the conference with a stroke average of 71.76 over 10 tournaments, while posting five top-10 finishes and carding 16 rounds of par-or-better. His 18 hole average ranks as the best single season mark in EMU history with 2,081 strokes in 29 rounds played. The Hartland, Mich. native was named the conference's co-Golfer of the Week, March 22, after shooting a one-under 215 (70-73-7) to tie for eighth at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular. Breault closed out the season with a 146 to tie for sixth at the MAC Championships, April 27, and help Eastern to a share its first conference title since 2008.
Breault joined Korey Mahoney (2006) and Graham Hill (2007) as the only EMU student-athletes to be selected the MAC's Golfer of the Year since the honor since it began in 1994. Listed as the only MAC student-athlete in the current Golfstat top-250 rankings, he is also just the second non-Kent State golfer since 2008 to capture the league's Golfer of the Year honor.
Celone played in 10 tournaments for the Eagles and ranked second in the league with a 71.93 stroke average, the second-best tally in EMU laurels. Leading the Green and White with 17 rounds of par-or-better, Celone registered four top-10 showings.
A two-time MAC Golfer of the Week honoree, Celone spearheaded Eastern's first-place finish at the EKU Intercollegiate, placing third with a 206 (68-69-69). He recorded the third top-five finish of his career at the Firestone Invite, Oct. 1-2, taking second with a 209 (70-69-70), before carding a first-round 66 at the Hawkeye Invitational, April 20-21, to tie for the 11th-lowest single round in EMU history. The Long Sault, Ontario product finished tied for sixth with a 146 at the MAC Championships, April 27, to help Eastern to a share the conference title with Kent State.
2019 MAC Coach of the Year Bruce Cunningham's team finished with the lowest four-player team scoring average at 289.1. The tally was 1.3 strokes ahead of the 2016-17 squad's mark of 290.4. Eastern Michigan finished in the top-five at six different tournaments this season, including a first-place finish at the EKU Raising Canes Intercollegiate, Sept. 15-16. Additionally, Eastern finished the regular season ranked 96th nationally with an 80-44-2 record with six top-100 victories and a pair of top-50 triumphs.
