EMU Totals Eight Podium Finishes on Day Two of MAC Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team collected eight podium finishes and qualified eight runners to Saturday's championship heats in its second day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, May 10.
The chase for the conference crown rages on after two days of competition, with Kent State University currently in the lead with 61 points. The University of Akron sits just five points behind the Golden Flashes, and the Eagles and Miami University are tied with 48 points each. Central Michigan University holds a total of 33 points, and the University at Buffalo rounds out the leaderboard with 27 points.
The Eagles were paced by three fourth-place finishes in the field events, as seniors Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio-Medina) and Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley) and sophomore Skyler Lester (Marietta, Ga.-Marietta) placed fourth in the hammer, long jump, and heptathlon events, respectively. Hierholzer cleared his career-best mark of 53.02m in the finals of the hammer throw, followed closely by sophomore Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy), who placed eighth with a mark of 52.31m. Hart cleared 7.44m in the long jump to take home five points for the Green and White. Lester fought through 10 events of the decathlon to score a career-best total of 6529 points, as well as recording two career-best performances in both the discus and 1500m with marks of 35.58m and 4:59.90, respectively.
In the shot put, senior Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich.-Avondale) finished his career in the Green and White with a sixth-place effort of 16.23m, while Hierholzer earned eighth with a clearance of 15.31m. Junior Carlos Sanchez Juan (Onil, Spain-Ies La Creueta) placed seventh in his first outdoor MAC Championships appearance, recording a leap of 7.13m. Rounding out the Eagles' scorers was freshman Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln), collecting seventh in the steeplechase, crossing the finish line in a career-best time of 9:35.42.
On the track, EMU collected eight marks to send student-athletes on to Saturday's finals, including two top-two times in the time trials from junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High) and senior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton). Posada outpaced the field of competitors with a 100m time of 10.45, while fellow Eagles' junior Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) and senior Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio-Madison Comprehensive) finished with the third and eighth-best marks in the time trials, crossing the finish line in 10.70 and 10.82, respectively. Underwood snagged the second-fastest finish in the 200m with a time 47.09, followed closely by sophomore Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England), who crossed the finish line in 47.73.
All three Eagles that competed in the 800m time trials earned qualifying marks, led by sophomore Owen Day (Ontario, Canada-International School of Dusseldorf) with a time of 1:54.95. Junior Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.-Blanche Ely) marked the sixth-fastest 800m run with a time of 1:55.21, and sophomore Derek Jones (Erie, Pa.-Cathedral Prepatory) finished ninth in the trials with a time of 1:55.63.
With the crown in reach, the Eagles continue conference championship competition Saturday, May 11 beginning at 11 a.m. with the discus and high jump.
