Nick Jones tabs Eastern's lone RBI
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the first game of its three-game series against Central Michigan University, 11-1, tonight, May 10, at Oestrike Stadium. A tough night for Eastern (11-38-1; 6-16 MAC), the Eagles were limited to just four hits, well behind Central's 19.
Offensively, it was junior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) leading the way for the Green and White, providing the team's lone RBI in the contest. After fellow junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) poked a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Jones singled to center field, getting the Eagles on the board, 9-1, in the sixth inning.
While EMU failed to score after the sixth, four Eagles tallied hits on the night. Freshman Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) and sophomore Shane Eastern (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) joined Jones and Owings in the hit club.
One of the best offenses the league has to offer, the Chippewa bats were hot early and often in the Friday opener. After scoring two runs in the second inning to take the game's first lead, 2-0, Central erupted for seven runs in three innings between the fourth and seventh, respectively, and took a 9-0 lead into the final three frames.
Four Eagles provided work on the mound in the game. Taking over for starter Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.) in the fourth, sophomore Luke McGuire (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Stevenson) gave the most consistent effort of any EMU hurler. The righty went four innings on the bump, allowing three runs while picking up a strikeout in his outing.
Redshirt junior Nick Porretto (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva (McHenry C.C.)) and freshman Jack Dungan (Commerce Twp., Mich.-Lakeland) came on to finish the pitching efforts for the Green and White.
Despite its best efforts, the EMU pitching staff was overwhelmed by the high-powered Chippewa offense as CMU racked up 11 runs on 19 hits in the game.
Eastern returns to action for game two of its three-game set with Central Michigan tomorrow, May 11, at 6 p.m. The series will conclude Sunday, May 12, with a single game slated for 1 p.m.
