House, Sparks provide impressive outings for EMU
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team is disappointed after falling in a competitive game two of its three-game series against Central Michigan University, 3-1, tonight, May 11, at Oestrike Stadium. Just one night after its pitching staff relinquished 11 runs on 19 hits, Eastern (11-39-1; 6-17 MAC) responded by holding the high-powered CMU offense to just three runs in the contest.
It was a duo of Eagle hurlers that kept the Chippewas in check, as sophomore Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) and senior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmel (Ind.)(Iowa Lakes C.C.) combined to toss all nine frames for the Green and White, allowing eight hits and three runs in the game.
After giving up a pair in the first, House found his rhythm, allowing just three hits and dusting four in his final four innings of work. The sophomore's best inning of the night was the third, where he struck out the side to keep Eastern within one, 2-1. In all, House went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits in his 85 pitch effort.
In relief, Sparks pitched with veteran poise. The southpaw began his outing with consecutive 1-2-3 innings, retiring six straight over the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Sparks went on to blank the Chips in their final two frames, keeping one of the league's premier offenses off the board for four straight innings. The senior ended his night having allowed only two hits, while striking out two CMU batters along the way.
Although the pair pitched at a championship level, the Eagles were unable to provide run support, scoring just one run on five hits in the 3-1 loss.
At the dish, it was a pair of left-handed hitters that took advantage against the top-notch Central Michigan pitching staff. Sophomore Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and senior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) each tallied two hits in the contest. Elsewhere in the lineup, junior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) added a knock for the Eagles.
Although two EMU hitters contributed multi-hit games, the team was unable to produce, putting up just one run for the second consecutive night in the 3-1 setback.
Eastern's three-game series with the Chippewas is set to conclude tomorrow, May 12, with a single game slated for 1 p.m.
