EMU heads to Knoxville for 52nd rendition of event

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team readies to  compete against the nation's top talent at the Tennessee Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee Thursday-Saturday, April 11-13.

EMU's appearance at last year's relays saw the team collect 15 career-best efforts, while registering 19 top-10 performances throughout the three-day competition, April 12-14, 2018. Former Eagle Hlynur Andresson captured a second-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase, crossing the finish line with a time of 9:20.71 for EMU's top individual effort of the weekend. Additionally, the Green and White's 1600m relay of then-senior Tyler Brown, then-junior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), then-sophomore Tyler Johnson, and then-freshman Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) and 1600m sprint medley relay of then-junior Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio-Madison Comprehensive), and then-sophomores Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely), Dan Kuhn (Erie, Pa.-Harbor Creek), and Joshuwa Holloman both notched second-place efforts with times of 3:07.38 and 3:31.11, respectively.

The Eagles look to continue their success from their most recent performance, competing at the Spartan Invitational, April 5-6. Friday's efforts were highlighted by senior Alex Jacobs' (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Jerome) first-place finish in the Pole Vault competition, clearing a career-best 5.06m, tying the seventh-best performance by an Eagle in program history. Saturday saw freshman Garrett Wade (Rio Rancho, N.M.-V.Sue Cleveland) and junior Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Westland) earn first and second-place finishes in the Javelin Throw and 110m Hurdles, respectively. Wade recorded the team's lone event title of day two with a career-best heave of 58.67m, more than two meters better than his previous top performances. Suazo also used a career-best effort for his silver finish, clearing the hurdles in just 14.32 seconds, marking the third-fastest performance by a Mid-American Conference athlete this season.

Competition at the Relays begins Thursday at 12 p.m. with the Heptathlon and Decathlon events, followed by the men's Javelin and Hammer throw, scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively. Friday's events begin at 11 a.m. and continue through 9 p.m., while Saturday's  competitions are set for 11 a.m. and will finish by 5 p.m. Live results will be available here, and live updates throughout the weekend's competition can be found on the Eagles' twitter account, @EMUMXC_TF.
