Nine Eagles Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

This marks the second consecutive year that EMU collected nine selections
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team had nine student-athletes earn Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team honors for the 2019 season, the league offices announced Wednesday, April 10. The Eagles top the conference for the most selections, tying Bowling Green State University, Central Michigan University, and Northern Illinois University. Additionally, this is the second consecutive year EMU had nine gymnasts earn the honor.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Receiving the nod for EMU was: senior Sydney Audet (Slyvania, Ohio-Sylvania North), sophomore Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick), senior Carly Clark (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Nothern), junior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), sophomore Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline), senior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center), sophomore Bri Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool), sophomore Jada Rondeau (Noorwood Young America, Minn.-Central), and junior Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton).
Audet, who holds a 3.63 GPA while majoring in psychology, competed in all 11 meets for the Eagles as a member of the bars lineup. The senior scored a career-high this season at the University of Illinois-Chicago, earning 9.625. This is the Sylvania, Ohio native's second time earning the honor, last awarded in 2017.
Bezold, holding a 4.0 GPA as a nursing-intent, competed in all 11 events as well, and was also an important member in the bars lineup. The sophomore hit 9.850-or-better five times this season, and nailed a career-high 9.900 at the George Washington Quad, Feb. 22, leading her to the highest bars RQS in the conference (9.850). The Maineville, Ohio native was honored as the MAC Specialist of the Week twice, earned an All-MAC First Team selection, and received the nod to compete at the NCAA Regional Championships, putting up 9.850 on bars at the Ann Arbor Regional, April 5. The sophomore earned the MAC All-Academic for the first time.
Clark, a biology major with a 3.4 GPA , closed out her final season for EMU participating in all but two meets on bars, while also competing on beam. The senior specialist turned in a personal-best on beam, scoring 9.800 at Bowling Green State University, Jan. 31. This is the second Academic All-MAC honor for the White Lake, Mich. native.
Participating in all 11 meets for the Green and White this year, Dobronics was one of two all-around competitors for Eastern. The Orland Park, Ill. native scored 39.000-or-better six times, including a career-best 39.250 against Western Michigan, Feb. 8, and altogether earned 17 scores of 9.8-or-higher. She was selected to the All-MAC Second Team, her first place finish on floor at the Mid-American Conference Championships, scoring 9.900, earned her a spot on the MAC All-Tournament Team, and made her the first EMU gymnast to take home gold on the event since Leah Hashimoto, Natalie Hashimoto, and Sarah Wasilenko, split the floor championship in 2002. The junior earned a bid to the NCAA Regional Championships as an individual all-around competitor for the second consecutive year, and carries a 3.37 GPA as an exercise science major. She earn hers second nod to the Academic All-MAC team.
An elementary education major boasting a 3.84 grade point average, Harden vaulted in all 12 meets for the Green and White, and earns her first Academic All-MAC award. The sophomore hit six scores of 9.700-or-better, while earning a personal-best of 9.800 on vault at BGSU, Jan. 31.
The anchor for Eastern this season, Hultgren participated in every meet for the Green and White, and competed in three of four events in all except one. She has now been honored with Academic All-MAC award three times in her career. The senior scored personal-bests in all three of her events, including a 9.850 at the Pittsburgh Quad on vault, Jan. 12, and 9.875 on beam at Bowling Green State University, Jan. 31. The Rockford, Ill. native is graduating with a 3.85 GPA in exercise science.
As a sophomore, Price competed in all 11 meets for the Eagles on beam, while holding a 3.95 GPA in business administration. The Kings Mountain, N.C. native earned a career-best on beam of 9.725 against Western Michigan University, Feb. 8. She earns her first Academic All-MAC honor.
Rondeau holds a 3.87 grade point average and served as one of EMU's two all-arounders throughout the year. She posted a career-high score of 39.275 against Kent State University, March 15. The sophomore was a workhorse for Eastern Michigan this season, setting personal-bests in all four events this season, including 9.875 on floor at the Northern Illinois Triangular, Jan. 18, and 9.850 on bars at the George Washington Quad, Feb. 22. This is her first Academic All-MAC honor.
Picking up where she left off last season, Smith continued to serve as a consistent member of the vault and floor lineups this season, while maintaining a 3.29 GPA in communications to earn a second consecutive Academic All-MAC award. The junior ranked 21st in the Central region on vault, owning a QRS of 9.830, good for a spot at the 2019 Regional Championships. The Telford, Pa. native tied her career-high by at the Mid-American Conference Championships, earning a second-place finish and a spot on the All-MAC Tournament Team.
Eastern's season came to a close at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional, April 5, as a trio of Eagles qualified to the first round of the NCAA Championships.
