Eagles Collect Four Event Titles on Day Two of Spartan Invite

EMU sees top performances from Bourg, Goff, and Gibson in East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team completed its weekend at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University Saturday, April 6. Day two of competition saw the Eagles accrue four event titles and 12 career-best performances to cap off the weekend.
The Green and White's four event titles came from a trio of Eagles, as sophomore Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), junior Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West), and redshirt senior Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern (Georgia State)) recorded first-place finishes in their respective events. Leading the way was Gibson, earning two top finishes in both the 100m and 200m with times of 12.32 and 24.64, respectively. The Toledo, Ohio native not only secured her top collegiate performance with her 100m effort but ran the 21st-fastest effort by a Mid-American Conference athlete this season. Her 200m ranks as the 11th-best performance in the league during the 2019 outdoor campaign.
On the field, Bourg recorded her first podium-topping performance of the 2019 season, clearing 39.59m for the Javelin event title. Just behind her was sophomore Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic), earning a third-place finish with a career-best heave of 38.16m.
Rounding out EMU's gold-medal efforts was Goff, recording a time of 13.74 in the 100m Hurdles, marking the fourth-best effort by a MAC trackster this season, while also earning a seventh-place finish in the Long Jump with a clearance of 5.46m. Additionally earning a podium finish was freshman Alysse Marie Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peters), placing third overall with a time of 14.10 in the 100m Hurdles. Wade also recorded a fourth-place effort in the 100m and a ninth-place performance in the 200m with times of 12.61 and 25.88, respectively.
In other success, sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) continued her program record-breaking streak with a fifth-place finish in the Shot Put competition, clearing 13.60m, the fourth-best effort by an athlete donning the Green and White. Earning two of the Eagles' other top-five finishes were senior Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio-Westerville North) and freshman Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton), earning third and fifth place in the 400m with career-best times of 57.97 and 58.74, respectively. Gazaway also earned fourth place in the 200m with a career-best time of 25.11.
Culminating EMU's last two top-five performances of the day were freshman Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) and Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) as well as junior Catherine Mittiga (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), as both placed fourth in the High Jump and 400m Hurdles, respectively, while Mittga earned a fifth-place finish in the Long Jump. Cernej-Garcia cleared the Hurdles in 1:05. 57, while Ward leaped 1.59m for her career-best performance. Ward also added a fourth-place finish in the Long Jump with a career-best jump of 5.50m. Mittiga saw her top-five success with a performance clearing 5.49m, .1m greater than her previous top effort.
To finish out the day, the Eagles' 4x400m relay squad of Cernej-Garcia, Sharpe, and freshmen Chevonne Wheeler (Dearborne, Mich.-Divine Child) and Arianna Short (Joliet, Ill.-Joliet West) earned a third-place finish with a time of 3:59.39.
The Eagles have the shortest turnaround of its young outdoor season when it travels to the Tennessee Relays, April 11-13, in Knoxville, Tenn. When available, more information on the meet will be available on EMUEagles.com.
